HP MediaSmart Server 3.0 Software Update Availability for Windows Home Server

Today HP finally announced the availability of the long promised HP MediaSmart Server 3.0 Update for owners of the EX480/475/485 and 487 MediaSmart Servers.

Here is the press release:

The 3.0 software update DVD will be available to order beginning later this week, with shipments beginning next week.  These optional updates are available to purchase for owners of our EX470/475/485/487 products who want to upgrade their servers to the latest 3.0 software that is shipping on the EX490/495 products.

Please note the previously communicated information related to these updates:

1) The cost of the upgrade DVD has been finalized and will be US$25 or €25.

2) These upgrades will be available as a server recovery solution.  HP recommends that you back up all server files prior to installing the upgrade.

3) This upgrade is not recommended for EX470/475 owners who have not already upgraded their Server DRAM to 1GB as certain features will not function.

To order the upgrade DVD, visit www.hp.com and enter your product model number in the “Support and Drivers” section.  Then follow the path for your MediaSmart Server model number to order the upgrades.

We thank everyone for their continued support of the MediaSmart Server family of products.

So there you have it – it’s finally going to be out!

    anyone know where we can get a whats what list? a list of all the features and benefits of this new update?? Im sure its on the site here somewhere but I have not been able to find it.

    Hi Andrew,

    I saw this comment at WGS;

    A word of advice to owners with 64 Bit computers- I recently tried (unsuccessfully) to do a system restore on my EX495. It would start the restore, then would freeze at ramdom places during the restore (no real pattern to the lock-ups). After a day on the phone with tech support during which we tried two different computers (both with Win 7 Home 64 Bit), they threw in the towel and sent me a new EX495 case. I was still unsuccessful running the system restore CD. I read in a user's forum that the Restore CD has issues with 64 Bit OSs (even though that's not documented ANYWHERE in HP's documentation or Tech Support database), so I borrowed a laptop with XP Pro (32 Bit) on it and the restore worked like a champ.

    The bottom line is if you try the upgrade CD with a 64 bit OS and it fails, don't panic (until you borrow a computer with a 32 bit OS and it still fails).

    Andrew, I vaguely remember reading an article here on something like this. Did you have something about restoring a 64 bit PC failing ?

    Andrew, old buddy, old friend, yeah I'm sucking up. Would it be to much to ask how to do the upgrade by replacing the system drive ?

    With the EX470 at a 500 gig system drive, this looks like a good oppertunity to replace the system drive with a 1TB or more.

    I read a article by MVP Olaf saying that if you have all folders with Duplication on, you now have a copy of what's on the D: partion of the system drive on a pooled drive, so you could remove the current system drive and replace it with a 1.5TB drive do a server recovery and those files will be rebuilt. Is this true?

    My approuch would be to do a Shares Backup of all the shares, replace the systen drive with a new larger drive, I'm not sure what would happen to the existing shares if I choose Server Recovery instead of a full server restore, then bring back in the Shares I backed up. If you wanted to keep the PC backups you would have to run BDBB addin before you start. This is a long process and you need enough storage space to backup the shares.

    What are your comments ? How would you handle this ?
