    How did you resolve the multiple servers on the network issue? Are you running vail remote access on different ports? I am currently having this issue.

    Run your test server on another port number where the number is XXXX. Assign Vail a static IP within your network and then assign port XXXX to that IP. Within your home network you can just use http://yourservername but outside you can use https://yourservername.homeserver.com:XXXX where XXXX is the port number you assigned to the Vail server.

    Do not use the following ports when assigning a new port to the Vail server.

    Ports used by PRIOR V1 WHS servers and HP MediaSmartServers:

    Type Port numbers Description

    TCP 80, 443 Standard Web site

    TCP 55000, 56000 internal (subnet only) Web site for Windows Home Server

    Web services

    TCP 1138 Transport

    TCP 8912 Backup and beacon

    UDP 8912 Backup and beacon

    TCP 2869 UPnP (Universal Plug and Play)

    UDP 1900 UPnP

    TCP 3389 Remote desktop

    TCP 4125 Remote access (when enabled)

    TCP 139, 445 File and print sharing

    UDP 137, 138 File and print sharing

    UDP 10284, 10283, 10282, 10281,

    10280, 10243

    Media connection

    Just heard today on the Microsoft Connect site that Vail only needs port 80 and 443.

    I should have been more specific. WHS v1 use the above ports so DO NOT choose one of those when using Vail. I will mod the comment.

    Do you have to also change the port(s) in IIS or just on the router?

    I had the router do the forwarding and then changed the firewall port in Vail. Even after I did this the WHS v1 fought with Vail so I made Vail my primary machine. Look for an article next week on that experience.

    I am looking forward to that article. I am currently struggling my 2wire router and having some difficulty with port settings to allow both servers to work on my network.

    I'm having the same problem. I get multiple errors with remote management/upnp/port forwarding. Don't know why – I have the two ports enabled.

      Try using your VAIL server as the primary internet server. After I wrote this article, I turned off Remote Access on my EX485 (I still can connect/use inside network of course) and let the VAIL server be the internet server. Every few days I just drag music and video files from the EX to the VAIL. I have had great success with this so far and should be writing another follow up article soon.
