You would be forgiven for thinking that sounds a lot like the SiliconDust HDHomeRun, because not only does it sound like that, it performs pretty much the same function.

You can take a look at some of our posts on the HDHomeRun to familiarise yourself with it again.

Anyway, here is how AVerMedia describe the HD HomeFree Duet:

AVerMedia HD HomeFreeTM Duet is a TV signal streaming device that allows users to watch high quality digital TV programs on PCs in any room within your home network. The powerful hardware design and dual-tuners provide up to two PCs to watch different HDTV channels at the same time without any video quality loss.

To set up your home TV network is easy, just simply connect a digital TV antenna and (wireless) IP router to the HD HomeFreeTM Duet. Your network-connected PC/ laptop with AVerTV 6 software pre-installed will automatically access the TV signal streaming from the HD HomeFreeTM Duet. Then, you will never miss any of your favorite shows and you may enjoy live HDTV programs or DVR functionality anywhere in your home without having a TV tuner or antenna attached to your PC.

It looks like an interesting device, it’s just a shame they couldn’t have come up with a name that didn’t make it sound like their competition!

Looks very familiar. I like the single antenna input. I wonder if they have good customer service. Does their website work?

  • Greg

Doesn't work with media centre, only their software, and so fare can't get it to work, can't get onto their wesite for drivers.

so far its a wast of money, go for the Homerun…..

FWIW, in a late followup comment, they now have a driver that allows you to use MC, you don’t need their full suite of apps, just this driver. Don’t know if that driver wasn’t released at the release of the device or not, but now it definetely does work in MC

        thanks Brett

    Thanks for the info Greg.

  • Dan

It took 4 attempts to get it to work. Followed all instructions re firmware upgrade (despite saying that firmware upgrade was successful, HomeFree Manage showed same firmware version as before), firewall setting changes, reinstalled 3 times after removing programs and deleting reg setting. Finally when it was working the channel scan did not pick up any of the 5 ABC digital channels. Then to top if off, after reboot of computer, it did not work. So much for "easy setup". Will try to get my money back.

We see so many brands of TV tuners and media servers that just don't work as you would expect. i.e. that they would have been tested and work out of the box. Early days for these devices.
