Here is how Icy Dock describe converter:

Icy Dock has changed the game yet again with the new MB982IP-1S 2.5” to 3.5” SATA/SAS SSD & HDD Converter. The MB982 is predicated off the incredibly popular MB882SP-1S-1B device, taking its general concept and improving it tenfold. This product is designed using the dimensions, connection locations, and mounting hole positions of a standard 3.5” drive, so that it can be used in any internal hard drive bay, as well as with backplane and hot swap modules.

The new converter utilizes a full metal design, creating a better environment for cooling, as well as giving it a rock solid construction, ideal for industrial, enterprise, and military applications. Improving upon the original, the MB982 can now handle both SAS and SATA drives, including the Western Digital VelociRaptor 10K RPM drives. To allow for 12.5mm and 15mm drive heights, we have included our SmartFit Technology, which secures the drive in its place whether it is a thin 9.5mm or thick 15mm.

The MB982 also includes most of the features that you already expect from an Icy Dock product: an effortless installation process without any tools or screws, plenty of ventilation slots to keep any drive used running cool and efficient, and a unique and stylish design. The top, front and rear allow air to flow through, and a special vent on the bottom gives the user visual confirmation that the drive has made a secure connection.

A Closer Look

The enclosure is very light, and very sturdy. The connectors on the back include the power and SATA connectors, an SAS connector if you want to use SAS drives and a button you press to open the lid of the enclosure (so no unscrewing required here, making it very easy to use). There are also a number of vents situated around and under the enclosure.

Adding A Drive

As I said I above, to open the enclosure is just a case of pressing the button on the back – this springs open the lid.

You then just pop the drive in and close the lid – the process of closing the lid actually moves the drive into place with the connectors. And removing a drive is just a case of opening the lid and then pulling on the small plastic tab to lift the drive out of the bay.

Here is a short video showing just how easy it actually is.

Final Thoughts

So once again Icy Dock delivers exactly what it says on the tin!

There are plenty of enclosures and converters around at the moment, but this one is very good quality, extremely easy to use and looks good (which is an odd thing to say considering it will be INSIDE your computer)! The button to open the lid instead of screws is a welcome addition and makes it even easier and quicker to swap drives.

If you have spare drives or drives you want to use internally on your PC, then look no further than the MB982IP-1S.

Cost wise, it retails for under $50, but as usual, look around as a few moments of searching came up with places selling it for less than $25!

And check out the UWHS Store for this, and other great Icy Dock bargains.

Here is another video about the enclosure as well.
