HBO has launched a mobile streaming service for current subscribers called HBO GO.  It allows users of compatible PC’s, IOS devices and Android devices to stream HBO content over 3G or WiFi connections.  Here’s what HBO has to say about this service:

What is required to sign up for HBO GO?

On which devices is HBO GO available?

HBO GO is available on a computer with a high-speed Internet connection and on the iPad, iPhone and Android smartphones. To access HBO GO you need an HBO subscription through a participating television provider.

What are the computer system requirements to access HBO GO from my computer?

HBO GO requires the following minimum system requirements: 1) An Adobe Flash Player with version 10.0 or higher. 2) An Internet connection of 3.0Mbps or greater (for HD content). 3) For Windows: An Intel Pentium 4 3GHz processor (or equivalent) with 512MB RAM/128MB of VRAM. 4) For a Mac: An Intel Core Duo 1.83GHz or faster processor, 512MB of RAM/128MB of VRAM. To check if you have the most recent version of Adobe Flash Player, go to www.adobe.com.

According to the HBO GO website, at the time that I wrote this article, the following providers were listed:

  • AT&T;
  • Charter;
  • Xfinity (Comcast);
  • Cox (listed as a beta participant);
  • DirecTV (my service);
  • Dish Network;
  • SuddenLink; and,
  • Verizon

You can set watch lists for your shows and new episodes will automatically appear.  Again from the HBO GO website:

How does the Watchlist work?

The Watchlist allows you to create a personalized list of shows you want to watch while they are available on HBO GO. Once you find a show you want to watch, select the (+) icon to add the show to your Watchlist. You can add an unlimited number of shows and from your computer, sort them by expiration date, title or your own customized order. The items in your Watchlist will remain the same, even when you log in to HBO GO from a different computer or mobile device. Shows will remain in your Watchlist until you remove or delete them, or they expire.

This looks like a nice, free way to extend my DirecTV/HBO subscription.  If you are Stateside with one of the above-listed providers, take it for a spin!

I plan on trying this out my my computer and iPad devices.  I’ll let you know how it works.

    How do i get the GO ID #.

  • Jim

    Not sure what a GO ID# is, but you need to have an account with your provider with an ID and password with them. For instance, I have HBO via DirecTV. When I log into HBO GO, I click on DirecTV and then log in using my DTV account ID and password. DTV then authenticates that my account includes an HBO subscription, and lets HBO GO grant me access to the data. It’s a slick way to ensure that the user has permission to use the streaming service. So to summarize, you need to have an HBO subscription with one of the providers listed in the article, you have to have an online account linked to your cable/satellite account, and you will authenticate to HBO GO using that account.

    Hope this answers your question. Let me know if it doesn’t.

    I have directv and when I log in useing my Id and pass it ask me to complete set up Go Id email Address and zip code needed. I don’t know what go id is.

    • Kevin

      Frank you have to create your own go id, it’s not issued to u. I went to maxgo.com similar to hbogo.com and signed up and created my own go id. When I signed back into hbogo.com on my iPad my go id created on max go automatically appeared after sign in with directv. So i believe if u do the same on hbo go it will work as well. If not go through max go cause that definately worked for me. Hope this helps.

  • Jim

    GO ID is the HBO-side account name. You need to give it a name and provide the zip code, then that is matched with your provider’s account to ensure that you have a subscription. Just provide a name for the GO ID.

  • Prescott

    What if I have HBO through my television provider only during certain dates? Like I have it for a month as part of my channels but it will be gone when the month is over, how will this effect my HBO GO?

      I’m not sure, so you should contact HBO and check with them.

  • Denise

    Do you know how to retrive a ‘lost’ GO ID? I say ‘lost’ because neither my husband nor I have created one, but when we try to use HBO Go it tells us his email address is already associated with a GO ID.

  • Jim

    Not sure. You may want to check with HBO.

  • Danna

    I would prefer to either pay HBO directly for their programming or pay extra to add HBO and SHOWTIME to my NETFLIX. REALLY TIRED OF PAYING FOR 100+ CHANNELS AND ONLY REALLY WATCHING ABOUT FIVE. WOULD LOVE TO SEND MY DVR BACK. wish HBO GO was available through netflix, amazon or directly online.

    Hi Jim, stupid question and I believe I did this on my old computer, but how the heck do you download it, or do you just sign in when you want to use on your PC? I’ve downloaded it on my mobile, not available for my tablet as yet, but will be soon I hope. I can watch HBO on my tablet, just not thru HBOGO. So what is the download address? Also is it MAC compatible? My daughter has a MAC.

    Thanks Jim, that did answer my question.it is NOT a download for PC or MAC,it is just a website to go to when you want to watch it. Appreciate your time and apologize for taking so long to get back to you

  • Carla

    Hello,

    I signed up for HBO GO and it was working perfectly. I have a 2 yr old MacBook. I recently moved into a new apartment w/ a new internet connection and now the streaming is VERY SLOW and buffers–I can’t even watch a show. And the quality isn’t as good. Is this a problem with my internet connection? My Airport is showing full bars. What should I do?

  • Jim

    Hey Carla. First, I’d make sure that you are connecting using your 5.0 GHz N connection to your router. You probably are…but I’ve found that streaming on G or less gives suboptimal results. Next question: are you on DSL or cable? If DSL, speeds might be a bit slow. Regardless, your ISP offers a certain speed. I’d check the speed that you are really getting and compare to the promised service level; http://www.speedtest.net/ is a useful resource to see if your speeds are up to snuff. Of course, I’d ensure latest drivers are loaded.

    Hope this is helpful…
