Windows Phone 8 update for HTC 8X available now

Last week saw an over the air (OTA) update to the HTC 8X Windows Phone 8 handset.

The update includes fixes for the annoying reboot bug (it’s been really annoying everyone who used the 8X) and also the bug that drops the Wi-Fi connection when the screen is off. It also includes SMS Call Reject, SMS Drafts and SMS Select features.

The update took about 10 minutes and is available now.

I have 4 HTC 8X devices on AT&T and I have been checking for the update every days for the past week or so. I have not seen it on any of the devices.

    They show Model: HTC PM23300

    Carrier: AT&T

    Software: Windows Phone 8.0

    OS version: 8.0.9903.10

    Firmware revision number: 1532.20.10012.502

    Hardware revision number: 0002

    Radio software version: 1.10.21.19.19_3_15.39.32.19

    Radio hardware version:2.26.0.D4

    Bootloader version: 0.0.1532.20(157404)

    Chip SOC version: 8960

I also have a HTC Titan That I got a year ago and it never got the update to avoid losing the keyboard in the middle of typing that came out over a year ago. I don’t really believe that updates are being made available to the general public.

I think it is a marketing test to see how may users will continue to use Windows Phones with known bugs and available fixes that are not being distributed. You give the fix to one or two users to stir up the blog traffic and then you stop sending out the updates and measure the customer pain level.

Actually, the droped Wi-Fi connection when the screen is off is not really a bug. It’s the way WP7 have always functioned as a way of conserving battery power. The Wi-Fi always re-connects (about 2 sec) when logging back in. With WP8 its an added feature. I have 9903/10006 on an unlocked phone in Canada – hope I get my update soon too!

Update executed fine on an unbranded 8X using pay as you go in Australia. SInce then… my Windows 7 PC says it needed to install a driver for the phone and now consistently says it can’t find any, anywhere… nor can I manually find any. Still looking… but until then, I can’t sync to the Windows 7 PC even though it worked perfectly beforehand.
