Fujifilm has unveiled its FinePix S1 point-and-shoot camera at the CES 2014. The superzoom snapper features a 50x (24-1,200mm) f/2.8-5.6 lens, and is resistant to both dust and water. The lens’s maximum aperture starts at f/2.8 at the wide-angle and dips to f/5.6 at the full 1200mm equivalent – that puts it slightly ahead of the maximum from similar superzoom models such as the Canon PowerShot SX50 HS and Panasonic Lumix FZ72 models. With a maximum autofocus speed of just 0.14 sec at the widest angle setting, and a continuous shooting speed up to 10 frames per second, this is one speedy snapper.
The camera also sports a 16-megapixel sensor, WiFi image sharing, a 10fps burst shooting mode, 1080p video recording, a 920,000-pixel electronic viewfinder, and a tilting 3-inch LCD display.
Fujifilm unveiled four other point-and-shoot cameras at CES, with the S9200 and WiFi-ready S9400W omitting the weather-resistant design and 920,000-pixel viewfinder to come at a more economical price.
The AA battery-powered S8600 serves as an entry-level model, offering a 36x (25-900mm) lens and 720p video recording, while the XP70 is a extra-durable device that is fully waterproof.
All five cameras will be released in March, with prices starting at $230 (£140) for the S8600, running up to $500 (£305) for the FinePix S1.
Yesterday PlayStation Access released a new video showcasing off the PlayStation 4 voice commands just in time for the release of the PlayStation 4 this Friday in the UK.
With the PlayStation 4 you can activate voice controls using a PlayStation Camera or the headset that comes bundled with each unit.
With browsing the PlayStation 4 menu, just saying “PlayStation” activates the voice controls. From the point you can say the name of a game, for example “Killzone”, “Battlefield 4″ and then say “Start” to begin.
You can also say “Login” to switch a user. If you’re playing a game or using an app, just saying “Home screen” this will takes you back to the menu. At any point you can take a screenshot by saying “Take screenshot”. Finally you can say ”Power” lets you log out or turn off the PlayStation 4.
At the moment the PlayStation 4′s voice commands are limited compared to the Xbox One’s, hopefully Sony will add more to the functionality over time.
What you think of the voice commands for the PS4 using the camera or via a headset.
First look at the PlayStation 4 DualShock Controller and Camera out for the PlayStation 4 on the 15th November in the USA and the 29th November for Europe.
Nikon today announced the new AF-S NIKKOR 58mm f/1.4G, an extraordinary FX-format prime lens that pushes the limits of image quality.
Meticulously crafted to deliver exceptional imaging performance, this fast new prime lens is in a class of its own.
The design concept pays homage to Nikon’s legendary Noct-NIKKOR lens, while the brand new optical construction enables astounding sharpness, contrast, and resolution. With outstanding resolving capability, exquisite bokeh, and unbeatable performance when shooting wide-open, this is a distinctive lens for those pursuing the holy grail of low-light photography or who want a lens with a truly unique signature.
A modern legend
The AF-S NIKKOR 58mm f/1.4G brings the advantages of Nikon’s renowned Noct-NIKKOR to today’s high-resolution photography. Thanks to concerted efforts in developing the lens, Nikon’s designers were able to significantly increase sharpness, contrast, and resolution, in addition to greatly reducing coma flare and enabling exquisitely smooth bokeh. The result is a unique lens that offers exceptional aesthetic control, enabling photographers to explore a broad range of creative expression and create images that stand apart from the rest.
Drawing with light
Designed to meet the demands of discerning photographers, the exceptional resolving capability of the AF-S NIKKOR 58mm f/1.4G enables every component of a scene to be faithfully reproduced in exquisite high-resolution. Subjects are sharply rendered when shooting at the widest aperture of f/1.4, and high-contrast images of even distant subjects and low-light scenes can be obtained without needing to stop down the aperture. Sagittal coma flare is effectively minimised across the entire frame with the result that point light sources such as city lights are reproduced as fine rounded points, even at the periphery of the image, enabling unparalleled nightscapes. Despite being a large aperture lens, peripheral light falloff is effectively controlled to retain brightness across the entire frame when shooting at maximum aperture, even with focus set to infinity.
Thanks to its unique optical design, the AF-S NIKKOR 58mm f/1.4G delivers images with exquisite bokeh and an additional sense of depth. Because the intensity of image blur transitions smoothly as the distance from the sharply focused point increases, bokeh appears with no rough edges. In addition, the fine gradation of bokeh from the focus point to the background enables an incredible sense of natural depth. By measuring the degree of resolution and bokeh across individual planes of the image (between foreground, focus plane, and background), Nikon’s designers achieved the perfect balance of resolution and lens aberrations, resulting in a ‘three dimensional’ look that cannot be measured with MTF curves. The benefits extend to movies, too: When pulling focus, bokeh transitions incredibly smoothly, providing a unique advantage when it comes to filming atmospheric scenes.
Renowned NIKKOR quality
Nikon’s Nano Crystal Coat provides outstandingly high anti-reflection effects throughout the visible light range, effectively reducing ghost and flare, and increasing the clarity and contrast of images. A three-element cemented lens technique ensures both optical clarity and reflection reduction, and the front lens element is located deep in the lens barrel to ensure that flare and ghost are effectively reduced even in backlit situations. Autofocus is smooth, quiet, and swift, thanks to Nikon’s SWM (Silent Wave Motor), and build-quality is solid.

Nikon today announced the D5300, the first DX-format D-SLR to feature built-in Wi-Fi and GPS.
Optimised for creativity and streamlined for flexibility, the D5300 is an upper entry-level D-SLR designed to inspire spectacular photos and videos. As the first Nikon D-SLR to boast built-in Wi-Fi, it offers creative explorers a fantastic opportunity to capture and share their world in incredible detail.
The camera’s innovative 24.2-megapixel DX-format CMOS sensor is specifically designed with no optical low-pass filter (OLPF) so the finest details and textures are captured with stunning sharpness. Photos are ready to share immediately using the built-in Wi-Fi function, which connects the camera directly to a smartphone or tablet, and the GPS function adds geotags to pictures in-camera. Capable of bringing creative ideas to life with striking clarity, this is an inspiring camera that draws exciting new perspectives.
As the first Nikon D-SLR to be equipped with built-in Wi-Fi, the D5300 takes photo sharing to a whole new level. Photos can be sent directly from the camera to any iOS™ or Android™ smart device1, ready for easy upload to social networking sites like Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter. The Wi-Fi function also makes it possible to control the camera remotely using a connected smart device, plus you can preview the scene you’re shooting on the smart device’s screen. Together with the camera’s vari-angle monitor, the creative possibilities are endless.
When it comes to sharing exciting images, the D5300’s built-in GPS integrates perfectly with the in-camera Wi-Fi function. Images can be geotagged simply without using any external adapters, by logging location information such as latitude, longitude, and altitude in the image’s EXIF data. Your travel pictures gain an extra level of detail, and since the GPS logger function works when the camera is turned off, you can actually keep track of your route even when you’re not taking pictures2. Nikon’s ViewNX 2 software can help create stunning travel maps which you can showcase on NIKON IMAGE SPACE, or any other social networking or photo-sharing website that support GPS, like Flickr.
Incredible image quality
At the core of the D5300 is a 24.2-megapixel DX-format CMOS sensor that has been designed without an optical low-pass filter (OLPF) to make the most of every megapixel, to faithfully render exactly what the lens sees. The texture of fine detail like hair or feathers are captured perfectly, and images burst with clarity — especially when captured with a NIKKOR lens.
High ISO light sensitivity (up to 12,800, extendable to 25,600 equivalent) combines with Nikon’s powerful new image processing engine, EXPEED 4, to ensure even clearer photos and movies than before when shooting in low light. The amazingly accurate 2,016-pixel RGB metering sensor sends data to the Scene Recognition System, thus enabling optimum auto exposure, AF, and auto white balance for the best possible image quality. Fleeting movements or expressions can be captured at exactly the right moment thanks to continuous shooting speeds of up to 5 frames-per-second, and focus is spot-on thanks to the intelligent 39-point AF system, which boasts nine cross-type sensors in the centre for astounding accuracy.
A fresh perspective
Designed to encourage photographers to find their own angle on photography, the versatile D5300 is fully equipped to help create interesting and inspiring images. The large 8.1 cm (3.2-in.) LCD monitor with wide-viewing angle and high 1,037k-dot resolution offers the ultimate freedom to capture unique shots, including great self-portraits, from any angle. Simply flip, tilt, or turn the monitor to explore fresh perspectives and add intrigue to your photos or excitement to your movies.
For even more possibilities, a range of in-camera tools put creative techniques conveniently at your command. Enjoy optimum results in high-contrast situations with HDR (High Dynamic Range) mode or quickly capture perfect shots in various situations using any one of the 16 scene modes. When you want to explore different ideas, let your creativity run wild with the camera’s range of special effects for photos and movies: evoke a certain mood by isolating specific colours, or create a retro look-and-feel with the Toy Camera effect.
Inspiring Full HD movies
For those who want to take their creative vision to video, the D5300’s D-Movie function records smooth, finely detailed Full HD video clips at frame rates up to 50p/60p. Offering the kind of superior performance and sharp focus that’s critical for HD video, the camera begins recording with a simple press of its dedicated video record button. Continuous Live View autofocus keeps subjects sharp, even when the action is fast, and you can relax and let the camera keep track of your subject with subject-tracking AF or face-priority AF. Thanks to the camera’s built-in stereo microphone and compatibility with Nikon’s external ME-1 Stereo Microphone, it’s easy to capture footage with crisp, clear sound. And when it comes to sharing your latest creation, the HDMI output lets you connect your camera directly to an HDTV screen so you can enjoy your movies and photos in superb high-definition.
With a body that’s even smaller and lighter than its predecessor (the D5200), plus a larger vari-angle LCD monitor, the D5300 is a pleasure to shoot with. Available in black, red, or grey, the incredibly lightweight build (the body weighs only 480g without battery and memory card) makes this a great camera to travel with, and a stable grip lets you get a firm hold on the camera. The large, high-resolution LCD monitor lets you see every detail of your photos and movies, and you can adjust the monitor’s brightness for a clearer image on the screen when shooting under bright light or in dark situations. The newly designed pentamirror increases viewfinder magnification to approx. 0.82x, making it even easier to accurately compose your shots. Nikon’s superior ergonomics, clear menus, and one-touch buttons for frequently used functions like D-Movie and Live View make operation quick and intuitive, so you can focus on your ideas.
NIKKOR, Speedlight, and system compatibility
One of the D5300’s greatest advantages is its compatibility with Nikon’s wide range of NIKKOR lenses and powerful system accessories. Combine the D5300 with such versatile partners, and your creative options become limitless. NIKKOR lenses are renowned across the world for their optical performance, and the D5300 is compatible with the full range of DX-format lenses. From compact zooms that are perfect for general use or travel, to fast prime lenses that enable beautiful bokeh (background blur), as well as wide-angle and micro lenses, there is a lens for every situation. Whichever you choose, you can enjoy the precision and flexibility to make the most of the camera’s 24.2-megapixel resolution and capture photos with vivid colour and striking contrast, or experiment with cinematic effects when shooting movies. In addition to lenses, Nikon Speedlights like the SB-400 and SB-700 open up opportunities to get creative with light, and optional wireless remote control devices like the WR-R10 and WR-T10 let you control key camera functions from a distance, even if there are obstacles between yourself and the camera.

Canon today unveils an outstanding new addition to its world-famous EOS series – the EOS 70D. Designed for aspiring enthusiast photographers, the EOS 70D is the ideal camera for anyone looking to take their photography to the next level. It combines completely new, world-first Canon imaging technology with powerful, creative and wireless sharing features – delivering a responsive, all-purpose camera ideal for capturing the moment with stunning images and Full HD video.
Capture the moment with stills and Full HD movies
The EOS 70D features a new 20.2 MP APS-C CMOS sensor, designed and manufactured by Canon. It’s the first Digital SLR in the world to feature ground-breaking Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology, which delivers smooth and accurate autofocus (AF) when shooting Full HD movies and fast AF acquisition when shooting in Live View mode.
Paired with the 14-bit DIGIC 5+ processor and 19-point all cross-type AF System, the EOS 70D captures incredible, full resolution images at up to 7 frames per second, with up to 65 JPEG or 16 RAW images in a single burst. Additionally, a native ISO range of ISO 100-12800 enables photographers to shoot in lower light conditions and use faster shutter speeds whilst retaining high image quality.
“I was incredibly impressed with how many new technologies the EOS 70D packs into one body, and how versatile it is,” said Brutus Östling, Canon Ambassador. “The EOS 70D is the perfect camera for anyone that wants to develop their photography skills. Not only is it suited to shooting people, landscapes and action easily and in outstanding quality, but also filming subjects in Full HD with focus speeds I never thought would be possible. The camera proved itself in the most challenging of circumstances, and had a range of new-generation technologies to comfortably solve any test I threw at it – especially with the new Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology. It really takes DSLR shooting and filmmaking to a whole new level.”
Canon’s new Dual Pixel CMOS AF provides swift AF performance when shooting in Live View mode and smooth accurate focus for Full HD movies. It makes it easy for users to take their next step with movies, enabling them to keep moving subjects in sharp focus and create professional-looking pull-focus effects. The technology utilises advanced CMOS architecture, allowing two photodiodes to be mounted within each pixel, both of which can be read independently to achieve autofocus, or together for image capture, with maximum image quality at all times.
An advanced AF system for stills includes 19 cross-type AF points spread across the frame, providing high speed, accurate AF – ideal for tracking sports and wildlife subjects as they move within the frame. The AF system is customisable, allowing photographers to adapt to the subject they’re shooting. AF points can be used individually, together in small groups, or as a wide active area for more unpredictable subjects. A dedicated AF area selection button, positioned conveniently next to the shutter release, enables quick switching between modes, without having to take the camera away from the eye.
Expertly designed for professional control
The EOS 70D’s powerful specification is packed into an expertly-engineered body that’s designed for comfort and swift operation. The Intelligent Viewfinder, with 98 per cent frame coverage and 0.95x magnification, allows photographers to comfortably frame their images and visualise settings via the electronic overlay. Conveniently-placed controls provide instant access to the most frequently used settings, such as ISO, AF mode selection and metering, so users can quickly change settings and concentrate on capturing the moment.
A 7.7cm (3.0”) Vari-angle Clear View LCD II Touch screen with a sharp 1,040k dot resolution is ideal for video shooting, or composing images from unusual and creative angles. The screen is a capacitive type, which supports a series of multi-touch gestures including swiping and pinch-zooming – perfect for navigating menus, amending settings or flicking through images.
Clever connectivity for easy control and instant sharing
The EOS 70D is the latest EOS model to feature integrated Wi-Fi, providing the freedom to remotely control the camera, as well as share images. Using Wi-Fi connectivity, users can connect to the EOS Remote app and control a wide range of image settings, including ISO and exposure, as well as focus and release the shutter. Photographers can also remotely use Live View mode, as well as review and rate their images.
Instant creativity unleashed
The EOS 70D features a host of creative modes to make capturing unique images easy. In-camera HDR removes the challenges of shooting in tricky, high contrast situations, merging three exposures into one that captures more detail in both the shadow and highlight areas. With multiple-exposure mode, photographers can shoot and combine up to nine exposures into a single image, or use a range of Creative Filters to instantly change the style and look of their shot.
Experimenting with creative off-camera flash is easy, thanks to the Integrated Speedlite transmitter, which provides in-camera control of multiple Canon Speedlite EX flash units.
Creative Full HD Movies
Alongside beautiful stills, the EOS 70D allows photographers to create high quality movies with ease. Full HD (1920 x 1080p) resolution video can be captured with a choice of selectable frame rates, including 30, 25 or 24fps, and 60 and 50fps at 720p, and a range of compression options for post-editing and sharing. Thanks to new
Dual Pixel CMOS AF, Movie Servo AF mode tracks subjects as they move, or even as shots are recomposed, ensuring they’re always in focus. Alternatively, users can select different focus areas over 80 per cent of the frame[ii] simply by tapping the touch-screen, even when recording – ensuring that movies stay sharp and clear if a subject moves or the user changes the composition of a shot.
Videographers can also enjoy stereo sound using the internal microphone, or enhance audio with the in-built external microphone input terminal. Full control over settings such as aperture and ISO is also possible within manual mode, giving users greater freedom as their skills develop.

Samsung has announced the Galaxy S4 Zoom, a new version of its flagship smartphone with advanced photographic capabilities. The Android handset, which comes with a 16-megapixel CMOS Sensor, optical image stabiliser and Xenon Flash, is the first device of its kind to offer 10X optical zoom.
The phone’s interface has also been revised, with a ‘Zoom Ring’ added for speedy in-call photo sharing, and instant access to the Quick Launch and Shortcut features.
Samsung has also included a raft of smart photography software on the handset, such as Photo Suggest, which connects the users to a huge library of images shot by fellow photographers at your current location as a means of suggesting the best shooting angles.
Core hardware specs of the Galaxy S4 Zoom include a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 1.5GB of RAM, a 4.3 inch Super AMOLED display with a 960×540 resolution and the Android 4.2 Jelly Bean operating system. The internal memory is 8GB, expandable by up to 64GB via the hot-swappable microSD card slot. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 LE and A-GPS. The Samsung S4 Zoom will be able to make phone calls and supports 3G with HSPA and even LTE connectivity.
“Combining our industry leading expertise in digital imaging and smartphones, the Galaxy S4 Zoom is a converged device that delivers on all fronts and is a product we are excited to be bringing to the market,” said Samsung UK president Simon Stanford.

HTC recently released their latest Android based smartphone, the HTC One. One of the the features that HTC were really pushing was the new camera and its features, including a new one called HTC Zoe. In order to show how well the camera works with Zoe, I went on a walking tour of East London to check out what it could do.
Let’s start by briefly talking about the HTC One phone itself. It comes in both a 32GB or 64GB option, and boasts a 4.7-inch screen with full HD resolution and a pixel density of 468ppi, which is significantly higher than the iPhone 5′s 326ppi. The HTC One is 4G enabled and runs Android 4.1.2, also known as Jelly Bean. The two speakers reside on the front of the phone, offering stereo sound, backed up by a smart system called BoomSound that automatically detects the acoustics of the surrounding environment.
I mentioned the new camera earlier, HTC call it the UltraPixel Camera. They say that it redefines how people capture, relive and share their most precious moments. Combined with HTC Zoe, it gives people the ability to shoot high-res photos that come to life in three-second snippets. These Zoes, photos and videos are then displayed in a unique way that brings the gallery to life and transforms the traditional photo gallery of still images into a motion gallery of memories. It also automatically creates integrated highlight films from each event comprised of Zoes, photos and videos set to music with professionally designed cuts, transitions and effects. These highlight videos can be remixed or set to different themes, and can be easily shared on social networks, email and other services.
To enable this innovative camera experience, HTC developed a custom camera that includes a best-in-class f/2.0 aperture lens and a breakthrough sensor with UltraPixels that gather 300 percent more light than traditional smartphone camera sensors. This new approach also delivers astounding low-light performance and a variety of other improvements to photos and videos. In addition, the perfect self-portrait or video is just a tap away with an ultra-wide angle front-facing camera which supports 1080p video capture. Multi-axis optical image stabilisation for the rear camera also helps ensure video footage smoother whether stationary or on the move.
HTC UltraPixel camera adds many other features and effects such as enhanced 360′ panorama, time sequencing and object removal. The device’s camera is just 4 megapixels in resolution, but HTC claims that the snapper uses “ultra-pixels” and a larger sensor than traditional smartphones, making it ideal for shooting in low-light conditions.
Users can also record HDR footage in 720p HD at 60fps and in 1080p at 30fps and capture short HD videos and images in burst mode thanks to the HTC Zoe feature.
So the best way to test the camera, and Zoe was to take it out around East London and see what it could do, and here are some of the results.
Here are a few pictures taken of someone walking down a street:
And here is what you can easily do with Zoe by simply tapping the screen to add or remove the subject or your pictures:
I was very impressed with the results, and it really was easy to use. You could have a lot of fun with the different options, and then sharing them with friends, family or strangers on the internet is also just a tap away.
There are other features with the HTC One, but let’s save them for another day. The HTC One is available now.
