    Final Thoughts

This is a really useful little bit of kit. I have managed to build up a few 2.5” SATA drives over the years and so having an enclosure that is simple to use is great.

The enclosure feels very sturdy and looks very smart.

The price for a pack of two premium enclosures is $44.99. You may be thinking why you would need two, but if you want to duplicate 2.5” drives you will probably need them both.

Although maybe Aleratec should consider selling them singularly as well? And hopefully in the future Aleratec will produce a USB 3.0 version as well.

There is yet another new product released from Icy Dock – this time a dual 2.5” to 3.5” SATA HDD & SSD HDD RAID enclosure – called the MB982SPR-2S.

    ID1ID2

Here is how Icy Dock describe the MB982SPR-2S:

Icy Dock is a household name for its high quality storage products for RAID applications, SSDs, and functional design. Now, all of those will be combined into one ground breaking product: the MB982SPR-2S. This little device packs a huge punch with features and performance, allowing 2 x 2.5″ SATA SSD/HDD to be converted to a 3.5″ SATA form factor for use in most internal drive bays, backplanes, external enclosures, and server racks. It transforms the 2 drives into a 3.5″ SATA drive with exact dimensions, mounting holes, and connection locations as a normal 3.5″ drive.

The device uses a full metal construction for durability and drive protection, especially for use in industrial computers and servers, as well as military systems deployment. Inside the case there is room for 2 x 2.5″ SATA SSD or HDD fitting the standard 9.5mm drive heights. Like our previous converters, the door mechanism moves a tray to connect and disconnect the drives as the door is closed and opened, respectively. This provides the user with peace of mind that the connection is solid. Also, similar to the previous converters, the installation process is completely screw-less and tool-less, saving the user time when first installing the drives, as well as any necessary maintenance throughout the product’s lifetime. On all sides of the box are airflow vents to provide adequate ventilation to the 2 drives inside, ensuring they operate in an optimal environment. On the door latch are 2 blue status LEDs which provide the user with drive activity, power, and RAID status.

The RAID controller gives users the option to choose RAID 0, RAID 1, BIG, and Port Multiplier mode, and it can be configured via software that is compatible with both PC and Mac systems. This allows the unit to be configured for blazing fast speed, system drive mirroring, extra storage, or just an easy way to dual boot a computer.

Icy Dock have just introduced their new dual raid enclosure, called the MB662USEB-2S, which is compatible with both Windows and Macs.

    15-11-2010 20-58-2715-11-2010 20-58-44

    15-11-2010 20-59-0015-11-2010 20-59-11

Here is what Icy Dock says about the MB662USEB-2S:

Icy Dock is proud to introduce its upgrade version of the dual bay RAID enclosure that set the standard for professionals, the MB662USEB-2S. This product combines the feature sets of the current MB662 Series into the ultimate RAID device for media professionals and individuals looking for performance, backups and storage expansion.

Similar to the current models, the MB662USEB-2S still utilizes an aluminum construction so that it is light weight for portability, and has the necessary material for optimal heat dissipation and durability. To help with temperature management, the cooling fan has been upgraded to an ultra quiet Sunon MagLev 40mm fan, and still features a speed control to allow the user flexibility according to his or her sound or cooling preferences.

The main addition to this new version is the quad interface design, allowing for USB 2.0, eSATA, FireWire 800, and FireWire 400, giving the user access to the best performance whether the data is needed on a Mac, Windows, and Linux system. Also, using an updated RAID controller, this unit can now accept 2TB drives in each slot to use in all 3 RAID modes, and thanks to a new concatenated JBOD mode, the user can have a combined storage volume without the risk for total data loss. The data is written across a single drive, and when it becomes full, it moves to the next drive, so if a drive fails, only the data on that drive will be lost. This is perfect for media players and NAS routers where a single combined volume is ideal. And as always, RAID 0 and RAID 1 are built in to offer blazing fast performance or maximum data redundancy.

    Feature:

    * Support 2TB+ in each slot for all 3 RAID modes.
    * MB662 Series fits 2 x 3.5” SATA I/II hard drives for maximum storage.
    * Plug & Play USB 2.0 + eSATA + FireWire800 combo with OXFORD936DS chipset.
    * FireWire 400 capability via FW800 to FW400 converter cable, supplied in the box.
    * Built-in hardware RAID controller allows Three different RAID configurations:
    RAID 0 (FAST), RAID 1 (SAFE), & JBOD (Concatenation/Spanned)
    * No additional software and hardware required for RAID capabilities.
    * User friendly Screw-less design just plug in the hard drive and play.
    * 40 mm Sunon cooling fan with adjustable speed control.

    * Multi-drive exchangeability & maintenance capabilities.
    * Built with Solid Aluminum Construction for body.
    * Built in security slot for security cable kit.
    * Compatible for both Windows and Mac.

    FINAL THOUGHTS

There isn’t really much else to say on using the enclosure. It is very easy to fit, easy to use, and works very well. Simple!

This sounds like the previous Icy Dock hard drive enclosure I reviewed, and that is because Icy Dock make all their enclosures to be simple and easy to use.

I had no problems at all and found it to be very simple. Although I would say that sliding a SAS drive in and out of the drive bay was a little tight, so take your time and don’t put too much pressure on it.

Overall I can highly recommend this enclosure as it works and does what it says on the tin. Yet another product from Icy Dock worth having.

To learn more about this enclosure, and other products from Icy Dock, click here: http://www.icydock.com/product/mb991ik-b.html

The MB991IK-B Hard Drive enclosure retails for less than $35, so it certainly won’t break the bank and is a very useful edition to your system, especially if you have some “spare” 2.5” or SAS drives laying about that you want to swap in and out of your computer.

And the beauty of this enclosure is that it will work with much smaller computer cases as it is designed to fit in a 3.5” drive bay.

Looking for a quad bay external drive enclosure? We take a look at the Icy Dock MB561US-4S-1.

Here is how Icy Dock describe the MB561US-4S-1:

Introducing the MB561US-4S-1 Quad Bay SATA External Enclosure featuring USB and eSATA Port Multiplier (eSATA Port Multiplier Card Required), and newly added, User Defined Fan Settings with Smart Cooling Technology.

We have taken our tried and true multibay product and added new features to further enhance your complete storage experience. Using all the features that you know and love, we have upgraded the 80mm cooling fan to allow the user to choose the speed of the fan, or to select “auto” so that the fan adjusts its speed using our Smart Cooling Technology. Our auto function determines the temperature of your drives, and changes its RPM according to the airflow and cooling demand. This results in decreased power consumption, an increased lifespan for your fan, and unnecessary excess noise. Along with the auto function, the user can also choose a high setting, best used for intense applications such as home server use, or a low setting, best used with lighter work loads such as hourly back ups or network attached storage (NAS).

The MB561US-4S-1 still includes all the standard features. A single e-SATA port provides a direct, single connection and flexible options for advanced users. With a port multiplier e-SATA connection, you can either connect to a port multiplier JBOD adapter to access four drives via one e-SATA connection, or connect to a port multiplier RAID controller card. This is convenient for those who do video editing through Mac or PC and wants configurations of RAID 5 settings for increased storage capacities and blazing fast transfer speeds.

The additional USB connection is for quick hook up to any computer system (especially laptops), which allow users to access up to four drives at the same time, and best of all there’s no driver installation required. This allows users to organize their music, photos, and work data under one enclosure, making it perfect for backup applications.

The enclosure takes up to four SATA drives. To power the enclosure, it uses a direct AC outlet, perfect to use it anywhere without having to deal with any adapters. The lightweight construction design protects hard drives with a layer of solid aluminum. It has a detachable 80mm ball bearing rear fan with 3 speed settings, and uses a built-in fan-less power supply, making it a quiet device.

The four hot-swappable drive trays offer great freedom of choice in expanding your storage solution and multi-drive exchangeability for easy maintenance.

    Icy Dock Specs

If you want to swap out SATA or SAS drives on a regular basis from your desktop computer but you don’t want to continue to open the computer up, then you should take a look at the MB877IK Hard Drive Enclosure from Icy Dock.

Over the years I have collected a number of older SATA hard drives as I have replaced them. Some of these go in my Windows Home Server and some are just used to store older stuff on. Whenever I need to access those drives, I either have to open my main desktop computer and sway things out, or I use an external device that enables me to sit the drive in. However, both of these are not ideal, the external device often plays up and I don’t like leaving my drives “exposed”.

This is where the MB877IK comes into play. This enclosure sits in your desktop and enables you to just slide a drive in and use it. As with other Icy Dock equipment it also cools the drive as well.

One great addition to this enclosure over other drive enclosures I have seen and used is that this one enables you to use SAS drives. SAS stands for Serial Attached SCSI and these drives are a lot smaller and faster!

    CONCLUSIONS AND FINAL THOUGHTS

There isn’t really much else to say on using the enclosure. It is very easy to fit, easy to use, and works very well. Simple!

The enclosure remains powered up at all times when the computer is switched on. I suppose I would have preferred an on/off switch at the front perhaps, but this isn’t a huge problem. And in the past I have certainly used Icy Dock enclosures for all my drives, even those I had no intention of swapping out.

Make sure that you connect the SATA cable to the correct port on the back of the enclosure, because yes, the first one I connected it to was no the right one! Still, that only took a moment to correct.

Overall I can highly recommend this enclosure as it works and does what it says on the tin. Yet another product from Icy Dock worth having.

The MB877IK Hard Drive enclosure retails for less than $35, so it certainly won’t break the bank.

If you have a need to connect some SATA disks to your computer externally, you might want to consider using a drive enclosure. The Sans Digital MobileSTOR MS2UT 2 bay drive enclosure also provides a RAID solution if you want to protect the data on your drives.

    WHAT IS THE MOBILESTOR?

The Sans Digital website describes the MobileStore:

The MobileSTOR MS2UT+B series is a fully loaded 2-bay external RAID solution designed for home and small business storage needs. With simplicity and flexibly in mind, this series is equipped with two hot-swappable 3.5” hard drive trays, as well as both USB 2.0 and eSATA host interfaces. In addition to RAID 0 and RAID 1, MS2UT+ also utilizes the latest Silicon Image 5744 chipset, supporting the newest SAFE33 and SAFE50 technology. SAFE33 and SAFE50 allows the creation of two hard drive volumes where 1/3 (SAFE33) or 1/2 (SAFE50) of the volume is used for mirroring and the rest is used for Spanning (Big). In comparison to SAFE (RAID 1) mode, which utilizes both hard drives for mirroring, SAFE33 and SAFE50 increase storage space by setting aside a portion of disk space for regular data storage while performing mirror simultaneously. By incorporating SAFE33 and SAFE50, the MS2UT+ eliminates the cost of additional hard drives needed for various storage modes.

    FEATURES

  • Hardware RAID engine, supporting RAID 0, RAID 1, Spanning, JBOD, SAFE33, and SAFE50.

  • What do you do if your PC cannot connect to your network or server during a PC Restore from Windows Home Server? If you have another PC on the network and a USB enclosure you can remove the drive and Restore from outside the PC.

    USB Drive Restore

    Background

My moms Inspiron 15 was having a conflict with SlingPlayer and simply removing the program did not solve the issue. Her work tech had made some changes and the laptop turned into a brick after Windows started.

I had a clean backup from a few weeks ago and told her I would Restore it last night. My plan was to stop by the parents, start the Restore and go home. I have done this a dozen times. Easy right?

    Not tonight.

    Video of the Error

Every time I got to the Server connection screen it would NOT find the Server. What’s a boy to do? (insert Google rejected curse word here)

    Restore to a USB Drive?

Yes, you can put the existing drive in a USB Enclosure and Restore your PC to that drive. This also means if you want to upgrade your drive for example, you can do it outside your existing system and just swap the drives out when you are done. How cool is that? I love Windows Home Server. Seriously.

    Remove Drive

Pull the drive out of the Inspiron 15. Two screws.

    USB Drive Restore

Remove the drive from the tray. Two more screws.

    USB Drive Restore

Hold drive in hand. Take picture with phone.
