Buffalo Technology announced a new new 1TB/2TB/3TB external hard drive built for speed, integrating a 1GB DDR3 cache to enhance performance.  Buffalo claims speed improvements of 350%.  Read on for details.

Buffalo Technology announced a new new external hard drive built for speed, integrating a 1GB DDR3 cache to enhance performance. Buffalo claims speed improvements of 350%.  The product is called the DriveStation DDR (although they tell me that the name is not finalized and could change) and is expected on shelves in early 2013.  Pricing is expected to be HD-GD1.0TU3 – $119 / HD-GD2.0TU3 – $149 / HD-GD3.0TU3 – $189.  Here is the DriveStation DDR portion of their announcement:

DriveStation DDR, available in early 2013, is a high performance external USB 3.0 hard drive with a large 1 GB cache for accelerated file transfer speeds:

  • Utilizes 1 GB DDR3 RAM cache for significant performance enhancements to outperform standard USB 3.0 hard drives by up to 350%
  • Features attractive, high-gloss chassis that can be placed vertically or horizontally
  • Available in early 2013 at an estimated street price of $119 for 1 TB (HD-GD1.0U3), $149 for 2 TB (HD-GD2.0U3) and $189 for 3 TB (HD-GD3.0U3)

The performance gain is obtained by adding 1GB of DDR3 to the drive controller PCB board and then caching write and read activity through the DDR3.  This has the benefit of providing a buffer and can also allow for fewer, more sustained reads and writes, which should translate into better performance.  Anyone who is using an external drive to perform video editing would appreciate the fastest speeds on the market.  While in their booth, Buffalo showed me the product performing drive speed testing and I consistently saw reads and writes being significantly better than standard drives.  To illustrate, here is a comparison of the DriveStation DDR speeds (on the right side) to a standard external drive without the DDR3 (on the left side).  You can see that sequential speeds are roughly doubled, with significant improvement also seen in 512K or smaller file transfers.  Of course, once you get into larger file sizes, the speed advantage is smaller.

I’ll keep you posted on availability as this product comes to market.

Today Seagate announced a new 4TB GoFlex external hard drive – yes, 4TBs!

goflex-desk-4tb-250x302

Here is the press release:

CUPERTINO, Calif. – September 7, 2011 – Seagate (NASDAQ:STX) today announced it is shipping a new 4TB GoFlex® Desk external hard drive – the highest capacity hard drive in the industry. This latest addition to the GoFlex Family of external hard drives showcases Seagate’s new desktop design. The streamlined industrial design delivers a smaller footprint and better reflects the aesthetic of today’s modern offices while still providing all of the benefits of previous generations of the GoFlex drives. The new 4TB GoFlex Desk drive is now available from www.seagate.com and will be available from select online retailers within the month for a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $249.99 USD. The entire line of GoFlex Desk products will also adopt the new industrial design in the coming weeks. The GoFlex Desk for Mac external drive featuring both FireWire 800 and USB 2.0 will be available in Apple stores by the end of the month.

“Yet another industry first for Seagate, we have reached a new high-capacity in the 3.5-inch hard drive form factor. At Seagate, we are committed to pushing the limits for our customers and will continue to adapt and innovate our products based on customer needs,” said Patrick Connolly, vice president and general manager of Retail products for Seagate. “This latest GoFlex® Desk drive offering, with its new industry-leading capacity point, is a statement of our continued commitment to meet consumer needs.”

The world’s first 4TB hard drive, Seagate GoFlex Desk, available now for $249.99.

As more of our entertainment and personal data become digitized, the significance of greater access to local storage becomes increasingly more valued. The new GoFlex Desk 4TB drive has the space to contain over 2,000 HD movies. This new GoFlex Desk external drive comes at a time when people are archiving more of their memories in the form of digital photo and video.

“IDC foresees there being an increase in global demand for personal storage capacity driven by the growing creation and acquisition of digitized videos, photos and music,” said Liz Conner, senior research analyst, Storage Systems, IDC.

Debuted in May of 2010, the award-winning GoFlex Family of hard drives provide an alternative approach to external storage solutions by allowing users to change interface adapters to stay current with the latest in interface technology. With USB 3.0 still undergoing adoption and the emergence of Thunderbolt technology in the coming months, the GoFlex adapter concept has been proven as an idea that works and Seagate plans to continue with this design for future iterations of the company’s external hard drives. The GoFlex drives are also Windows and Mac OSX compatible and have the flexibility to go between both operating systems. In addition to cross-platform compatibility, the GoFlex Desk drive can also be utilized with the GoFlex Home adapter if one chooses to use it as a network drive.

With the pre-loaded back up software, the GoFlex Desk external drive provides automatic, continuous back with encryption for all your files. The included USB 3.0 adapter also works with USB 2.0 ports making it easy to connect to your Windows or Mac computer. The adapter also features an illuminated gauge to display available space on the drive.

Final Thoughts

I like this drive. It is small and fast and it is very light weight so you won’t even notice you are carrying it. It is also very quiet and even after a lot of use it wasn’t that hot.

The drive easily picks up fingerprints and other marks, but it can be wiped down with little effort.

The inclusion of disk encryption software was a very welcome addition, and the software is very easy to use. I highly recommend if you are going to use this drive for storing anything personal you use the encrypted partition.

I was happy with the speeds from my USB 3.0 card, and I think if I had a motherboard with a dedicated USB 3.0 port on it I would probably get faster speeds!

Price wise, the 64GB is £183, the 128GB is £325 and the 256GB is £624, so make no mistake these drives are not cheap, but they are good.

If you need a small and light external DVD-ROM drive you may want to take a look at the eTDU108 from Lite-On.

If you have a netbook then you probably don’t have any media drive with it (unless you have already purchased one). Lite-On have released a very small and lightweight DVD-Rom drive that connects via USB to your netbook, or any other computer, such as your Windows Home Server if you need to read disks.

USING THE eTDU108 AND FINAL THOUGHTS

The eTDU108 is very light, so carrying it around in bag won’t be a problem, and it is small. A really nice addition is the USB cable fitted under the drive, all you have to do is pull it off and connect it up. This ensures that you don’t leave home without a cable (unless you didn’t put it back after the last time you used it).

I had no problems using it on several different machines and with several different types of media.

My only two negative comments on the eTDU108 is the noise it can generate when media is spinning and the speed. 8x is the fastest it will do, and that seems almost like the dark ages these days!

Price wise it is quite cheap – under £30 in the UK now and under $50 in the US, although you can probably find it cheaper by looking around.

The eTDU108 is available in both white and black.

Is this right for you? Only you can decide, but given that external writers are not that much more expensive, and are faster, you may want to look at one of those if you want that extra capability.

With an interface that’s up to 10 times faster than the previous-generation USB 2.0 interface, the high-performance My Book 3.0 drive significantly reduces the time it takes to open and save large files.

“Consumers no longer have to wait for technology to keep up with their ideas. With the new super speed My Book 3.0 drives, consumers have the speed they need for resource-intensive video editing, animation, and graphic design applications,” said Dale Pistilli, vice president of marketing for WD’s branded products group.
