Maxell has announces the launch of the first two headphones in its upcoming M-Mark premium brand of headphones. The M-Mark collection will consist only of technology-specific in-ear headphones showing Maxell’s commitment to providing outstanding audio quality and precision. The two M-Mark models, the MXH-DD600 and the MXH-DBA700 will be available in November.

The new MXH-DD600 features dual dynamic drivers, while the MXH-DBA700 features a hybrid design that pairs a balanced armature with a dynamic driver. Both designs have a rigid aluminium body for reduced resonance of unwanted frequencies.

maxell_2

The MXH-DD600 has powerful dual dynamic drivers for both low and midrange frequency responses. These give a powerful bass, without detracting from the mid to high frequencies, delivering a balanced sound across the range.

The hybrid design of the MXH-DBA700 combines the benefits of two sound transducer technologies. The balanced armature offers precision in the mid-to-high frequency range where it excels. The hybrid design additionally uses a dynamic driver, which is better suited to handle the lower frequency sounds. This means the hybrid design delivers the best of both technologies.

Both models feature earpieces that are treated with silver ion, which has antibacterial properties. Silver ion is used in dentistry and medicine to reduce bacterial infections. The headphone cable is designed to be flat, which is not only stylish, it greatly reduces tangling. The in-ear design comes with four sizes of earpiece, for a perfect fit for all ears.

Availability

The MXH-DD600 will be available from November. The SRP will be £79.95 including VAT.

What’s in the Box?

The box contains a carry case containing the headphones, some manuals and a spare cable (which is always useful, especially if you have cats that like to chew on cables!)

CDW Review of the Sennheiser MOMENTUM On Ear Headphones - 1CDW Review of the Sennheiser MOMENTUM On Ear Headphones - 2CDW Review of the Sennheiser MOMENTUM On Ear Headphones - 3

The is quite large as the headphones themselves don’t fold up, but it looks great and offers a lot of protection.

CDW Review of the Sennheiser MOMENTUM On Ear Headphones - 4

Inside the case there is also a pocket to store your spare cable or anything else small.

CDW Review of the Sennheiser MOMENTUM On Ear Headphones - 5

The spare cable is just a cable, it doesn’t have the remote that the main cable has, but it’s useful non the less.

CDW Review of the Sennheiser MOMENTUM On Ear Headphones - 6

A Closer Look

Inside the carry case is a cloth bag with the headphones in which provides another layer of protection, which you can’t get enough of!

CDW Review of the Sennheiser MOMENTUM On Ear Headphones - 7

The iRemote has the all the usual abilities you would expect for listening to music, it also has a built in mic and the ability to be used to make and receive phone calls. It can be used with any Apple idevice (so the iPod, iPad or iPhone).

CDW Review of the Sennheiser MOMENTUM On Ear Headphones - 8CDW Review of the Sennheiser MOMENTUM On Ear Headphones - 9

You can easily detach the cable to either replace it with another or for easy transport. It just a small turn of the connector and pull the cable out. This is good as it stops the cable from falling out.

CDW Review of the Sennheiser MOMENTUM On Ear Headphones - 16

Ensuring that the headphones fit comfortably on your head is easy as the ear cups are easily positioned by moving them on the headband.

CDW Review of the Sennheiser MOMENTUM On Ear Headphones - 11

As you can see, the headband and the ear pads are covered with Alcantara (and the colour is dependant on which one you purchased). The Alcantara is very soft and even after prolonged used I didn’t feel any discomfort.

CDW Review of the Sennheiser MOMENTUM On Ear Headphones - 12

And in the recent heat we have had here in the UK having a material that is breathable certainly helps the comfort factor, as there is nothing worse than having the ear pads stick to your ears!

CDW Review of the Sennheiser MOMENTUM On Ear Headphones - 13

And as well as being practical, it also looks great!

Final Thoughts

I am a big fan of Sennheiser mics – I use a set of their wireless lav mics when I do video interviews, and I have used a set of in-ear headphones in the past, so I was happy to try on a pair of the new Momentum on-ear headphones and see just how they sounded.

WP_20130704_003_thumb

I do a lot of travelling and so having a really good quality pair of headphones is really important to me. They have to have great sound (which is a given really) but also be comfortable as I can often wear them for many hours at a time.

The Momemtum on-ear headphones do not disappoint and they ticked both boxes for me perfectly. I wore them on a recent flight and they were very comfortable, however they are not noise cancelling so you may find they are better suited to quieter environments, such as your home, where they excel.

There is also the added bonus of having a built-in microphone as part of the iRemote which means that I didn’t need to take off the headphones to make or receive calls. Personally I don’t see myself using that feature much when I am out and about (that’s a personal preference) but when I am at home, that’s a different matter.

I also liked that the cable was removable and replaceable. The removable part makes it very easy to transport in the headphone case (there is a pouch for it) and the fact it is replaceable means that when one of my cats decides to eat through the wire (as so often happens with cats) I don’t need to replace the entire thing, just the cable.

There are four different colours to choose from too! So if you want a good looking, practical high quality pair of headphones then you should definitely take a look, and a listen, to the Sennheiser Momentum On-Ear headphones, you won’t be disappointed.

The Momentum On-Ear headhphones are priced at a very reasonable £169.99 and are available now from John Lewis or via Sennheiser’s online store. They come in either Pink, Green, Ivory or Blue (the colour we reviewed).

To me film and games without a decent sound system are pointless. That little double D symbol makes all the difference and Tritton know this. The Tritton Pro+’s (and their predecessors the Tritton AX PRO’s) are one of very few headsets that can boast a true 5.1 surround sound system. Other headsets do a great job mimicking the surround experience, and for gaming it is even seen as an advantage, giving you access to digital balancing methods beyond that of a conventional 5.1 system. But seen as we have a true 5.1 headset what’s the point in limiting the Pro+’s only to games?

Even as I write this any potentially irritated neighbours are undisturbed by the enormous bass pounding my ears. In fact, the potential of the bass created by the Pro+’s is enough that you can even feel the air move like a proper sub. If the Pro+’s had a week point, it would definitely be music; but they still perform very, very well. Bass is defined but fat, adding adequate punch wherever it may be needed. High frequencies still don’t get muddled though and no noticeable clarity is lost during pacier moments. So, the Pro+’s can handle a stereo or Pro Logic feed very well. From my previous experience with Trittons I was ready to be impressed, but was still surprised at how well they handled something they weren’t particularly designed for. Lets get some proper Dolby 5.1 on the go!

PROplus_black_007

Turning to a film; explosions, gunshots and punches are full and rounded but never lose focus. Voices and shattered glass stay clear and manage to create space during busy action. It’s amazing how soundtrack, dialogue and sound effects all fit into such a small physical space and simultaneously avoid tripping over each other. One of the best things is the relief of not worrying about sound pollution. Admittedly this won’t effect everyone but I know I find it frustrating constantly turning volume up during dialogue and then having an explosion irritate everyone in my house. The Pro+’s are certainly a better solution than using dynamic range compression and potentially spoiling those nice, loud action sequences. Having the power and finesse of a proper 5.1 sound system in a headset is truly liberating.

Although the Pro+’s where designed for gaming, the necessity of comfort over long periods of time was clearly integral to their design. The new rotating cups and a shaped corner allow them to snugly and securely fit over your ears. Even after 2 hours I had no discomfort at all. I genuinely forgot I even had them on at certain points. Despite this comfort being predominantly designed for gaming sessions it’s nice for watching films too.

The Tritton Pro+’s are great for video games but they can be so much more. What you have is a portable 5.1 sound system that’s more than capable of high quality sound output with just about anything you feed them. To get anywhere near this quality of sound in a home cinema system you’re budget would need to be much more than £150. I have a decent mid-range system, nothing to boast about, but decent. Anyone else with a surround system will know, I’ve probably spent at least as much as a pair of Trittons on wiring alone over the years.

I also happen to have a pair of the old Tritton AX Pro’s and the Pro+’s are a noticeable improvement, especially where build quality, ease of use and comfort are concerned. Whether you are looking to upgrade your headset or complement your home cinema system the Tritton Pro+’s have to be tempting choice. For gamers and film buffs alike the Pro+’s offer great audio quality, especially at this price bracket. If your serious about games and have the money, buy these. You won’t be disappointed.

CDW-Rating-Banner-black-5

The Tritton Pro+’s, how do they stack up in the competitive world of gaming, where every edge counts?

There’s a unique, almost ambivalent feeling of being sarcastically stabbed in the back on an FPS. Hate and embarrassment course through, whilst you simultaneously curse and pray that nobody bared witness to such an event. In come the Tritton Pro+’s. Let’s hope they can make that a thing of the past and finally answer truthfully if you can really hear footsteps coming up behind you.

True 5.1 surround sound is the selling point here; rather than mess about digitally emulating directional noise, Madcatz have opted for surely the most logical solution to having eyes in the back of your head, add more speakers! With four Neodymium drivers in each cup, (front, center, surround and sub) directional placement is defined and accurate.

feature-details-3-black

What with the Pro+’s being, primarily, designed for gaming, it’s slightly nonplussing to discover there are no downloadable pre-sets such as the rival Turtle Beach lines. However instead, we are gifted with a truly customisable inline volume controller, with each of the four speaker levels able to be be altered relative to one another. Meaning that, should grenades lack that little extra oomph, the bass can be increased to almost inordinately head squeezing levels; the rear speakers, after being thrown up a few notches, will make you swivel like a paranoid ballerina in full swing.

Even at their uppermost volume, which I don’t recommend you stay on for too long for obvious pain-related reasons, the Tritton’s don’t seem to distort. Crystal clear and punchy audio envelops what little space surrounds your ears; subtle game audio cues are amplified to the point of wondering how you’d never heard them before. The sound of a grenade pin being pulled or the cheeky blip of a claymore the instant before it takes your legs off are surprisingly sharp and noticeable. Not so clichéd subtleties are also present such as the bewildering inclusion of flies buzzing around on certain Black Ops 2 maps, it’s astonishing how much audio can be missed without such fidelity.

PROplus_black_001

The ability to adjust on the fly with this headset to your own specific needs, is to it’s benefit. Being able to alter in game volumes on a per speaker level is hugely advantageous. Combine this with modifying the chat level independently and you’re in full control. Lowering the chat volume when in a lobby of reprobates can leave you grinning in blissful ignorance to the profanities of your fallen prey, whilst still being able to keep an ear out.

Take it off mute for a second though and the clarity of online voice chat is in a different league to any ear buds or television speakers around. Microphone quality is also several strides above par, picking up very little background noise if adjusted properly. Selectable Voice Monitoring (SVM) is a nice feature, providing feedback of your voice through the cups. I feel a little self conscious if I can’t hear myself talking so I generally leave this on! A simple depress of the chat volume button will toggle it off and on should you wish. A point of note is that not only is the mic almost infinitely adjustable due to it’s malleable nature, but it can also be completely detached leaving you with a snazzy pair of cans for relaxing with a film or some music.

PROplus_black_006

Comfort levels are beyond my expectations. The cushioning at the head band let’s it fit all styles of head without it cuddling you so hard it brings on a headache; the cups envelop your ears, lobe and all, to give a satisfying fit. Even during a hardcore (gaming) session, if anything, they seem to get comfier and, aside from some hot ears, they’re barely noticeable after a while.

Everything you need to get setup is included; plugging it all in shouldn’t take more than a few minutes once you’ve pried everything out of the gloriously over engineered box. Only one AC socket is required this time around and wires are kept to a minimum, except the headset cable of course, which is a healthy 12ft. leaving you plenty of dancing space before wrenching your hi-fi stand apart.

They may not sound as good as a high end surround sound system, but then they are a fraction of the cost in comparison. They also may not turn average Joe into the next big YouTube star, but they’ll certainly help him along the way. What they are then, are a bit like glasses for your ears. They’ll help you hear the little details you never knew were there, but you’d have to know how to listen in the first place; those that know how to take advantage of that will become better players because of it. And yes, you really can hear footsteps behind you.

On a recent trip to Paris with Ubisoft for Watch Dogs, I had the chance to play Watch Dogs for a few hours, from the start, and here are my thoughts.
