Western Digital this week introduced a variety of new entertainment options for the WD TV Live and WD TV Live Hub media players.
Current and new customers can now enjoy Red Bull TV, Acetrax and AOL HD. They can also watch live and recorded TV with the new SlingPlayer app and save their premium HD movies to the WD TV Live Hub’s internal storage with VUDU direct movie downloads.
Previously available on the WD TV Live, BBC iPlayer is now available on the WD TV Live Hub.
WD’s new entertainment choices add to the WD TV media player family’s prodigious ability to play personal content such as videos, photos and music by supporting a wide range of media formats. Customers can watch content located on any networked PC or Mac computer in the home, from a network drive such as WD’s My Book Live personal cloud storage, and from any directly connected digital camcorder, camera, or USB drive. WD TV Live Hub customers can also save and share pictures and videos from outside the home, using the WD Photos app for iPhone, iPad and Android mobile devices.
“WD continuously listens to its customers, and adds the content options they want,” said Scott Vouri, vice president and general manager, WD Connected Home Solutions. “With today’s addition of hot international and domestic channels, live TV through SlingPlayer and direct HD movie downloads through VUDU, to our personal content playback options, the WD TV media players truly provide the most entertainment.”
The WD TV Live Hub is the only media player to offer direct HD movie download service for today’s hottest new movie releases purchased from VUDU’s large library of movies and TV shows. Because it has an integrated 1TB hard drive, the WD TV Live Hub can save and play back purchased digital content from VUDU, including the high-quality HDX video format that features 1080p Full HD and rich Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 audio. “By centralising their entertainment on the WD TV Live Hub, our customers get high-performance full-HD movie playback without overloading their home network or cluttering up the hard drives of other PCs in the house,” added Vouri. From “Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol” to “The Muppets,” WD brings today’s top movies to the WD TV Live Hub for a cinema-like experience at home.
The new SlingPlayer app creates a whole home entertainment solution by allowing customers to stream live or recorded TV from a network-connected Slingbox to any other TV in the house, simply by connecting a WD TV Live.

Today LaCie announced the availability of the eSATA Hub Thunderbolt Series, its latest peripheral featuring Thunderbolt technology.
This product delivers a solution for connecting eSATA hard drives to Thunderbolt-compatible Mac computers, making them backwards compatible. The eSATA Hub also boosts transfer speeds and allows users to daisy chain with other Thunderbolt peripherals.
Give New Life to eSATA Drives
Consumers with new Macs who are interested in getting the best possible speeds with their existing multi-interface drives are no longer limited to USB or FireWire connections. In addition, businesses, photographers or other creative professionals who have upgraded their Macs to versions without ExpressCard/34 slots are now able to capitalize on their previous investment in eSATA hard drives.
Daisy Chain Capability
The eSATA Hub’s dual Thunderbolt ports allow users to daisy chain other Thunderbolt peripherals. This means users can connect up to 12 eSATA drives (6 Hubs x 2 eSATA drives per Hub) to a Mac while maintaining full eSATA 3Gb/s speeds. It also helps organize desktops by connecting both a Thunderbolt compatible display and storage device via a single cable to their Mac.
The eSATA Hub Thunderbolt Series is available through the LaCie Online Store and LaCie Storage Partners starting at the suggested retail price of $199.00.

On November 2, 2010 I was able to attend the Windows Phone 7 Executive Briefing Event held at the Microsoft facility in downtown Los Angeles. I arrived at 8:30 and opened the netbook, ready to write down all I could about Windows Phone 7. Read on to find out more about the Windows Phone 7.
I took a vacation day from work and rode the Metro downtown to the Wells Fargo Center. 33rd floor. Very nice. Seriously.
Arriving at the Microsoft Los Angeles location, I was greeted by crisp signage and smiling faces. I was early so the phones were not out and I would have to wait to get my chance to review the new Windows Phone 7. I sat in a conference room with 50 other people waiting for the festivities to begin.
The Microsoft Mobility Specialist, Toni Abrusia Bollinger, was the first to speak and tell us about Windows Phone 7. She told us to forget everything we knew about Windows Mobile. Toni started talking about hubs. Hubs?
Windows Phone 7 has hubs. According to Toni, these six hubs (and the associated facts) are environments labeled as:
- People – Contacts are integrated with applications such as Outlook and Facebook
- Games – Xbox type games
- Pictures – Camera usage is the second highest rated activity on mobile phones
- Music – Includes Zune Music, TV and Movies
- Office – Office Hub beats any other experience and integrates SharePoint.
- Marketplace – 1,000 Apps ready now, 10,000 supposed to be ready by June 2011
Note: Great conference room. Crappy cell service. Even the T-Mobile reps were only getting 2G service.
