WD today announced the debut of WD Redhard drives, an innovative line of SATA hard drives specifically designed for home and small office NAS (network attached storage) systems with one to five drive bays. Compatibility-tested with top NAS box manufacturers and optimised for power and performance, WD Red hard drives are now shipping in 3.5-inch 1 TB, 2 TB and 3 TB capacities.

Diablo Cover On_straight_overhead_1TB

The WD Red line features NASware technology, designed to improve reliability and system performance, reduce customer downtime, and to simplify the integration process. This new product line addresses the unique environment of NAS and the growing demand for affordable, reliable, and compatible storage that reduces customer total cost of ownership. WD Red hard drives also feature 3D Active Balance Plus, an enhanced balance control technology, which significantly improves the overall drive performance and reliability. In an exclusive service for WD Red customers, WD is offering free premium 24×7 dedicated support and a three-year limited warranty.

The addition of WD Red expands WD’s “Power of Choice” client hard drive solutions. WD recognises that customers and their applications are diverse and they should be empowered to choose the drives that best suit their specific storage needs. With distinguishable colours, the “Power of Choice” storage solutions are clear and easy to identify: WD Blue (solid performance and reliability for everyday computing), WD Green (cool, quiet, eco-friendly), WD Black (maximum performance for power computing), and WD Red (home and small office NAS). The four colours enable quick selection of the best WD drive for customers’ application or usage requirements.

“The network attached entry level storage market is poised to grow at an 86.2% 2011-2016 CAGR,” according to John Rydning, IDC’s Research vice president for hard disk drives. “WD’s new Red hard disk drives offer a unique combination of product features and customer support for users seeking to expand the capacity of their entry level network attached storage solutions.”

“Until now, customers had to choose between using desktop or high-end server drives for their home or small office NAS systems – neither of which were both cost effective for consumer solutions and fully NAS compatible,” said Melyssa Banda, senior director of product marketing for WD. “WD saw this challenge as a perfect opportunity to design a better solution so we developed WD Red drives, an optimised product for this rapidly-growing segment.”

WD Red hard drives integrate seamlessly with WD NAS solutions, and are qualified to work with a wide array of WD OEM partners. An updated list of WD Red-qualified products and manufacturers is available on the WD website at http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=810.

WD Red hard drives are available now at select resellers and distributors. Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for the WD Red 1 TB drive (model #: WD10EFRX) is £69.99, the 2 TB drive (model #: WD20EFRX) is £89.99 and the 3 TB drive (model #: WD30EFRX) is £129.99.

We should have some RED drives for review very soon, so watch this space.

CDW was told that WD are also dropping the Caviar and Scorpio name and replacing the those names with the new colours branding to try and make it easier for users to understand what drives they have or might want. Also they are now including QR codes on the drive (as you can see in the image above). This is a good idea, and along with the new 24×7 support line just for the Red drives, buyers should be very comfortable in their selections.

Today Drobo announced two new devices – the Drobo 5D and the Drobo Mini. Here we talk about the Drobo Mini.Drobo Mini Hand

Drobo Mini is a technical marvel that redefines personal, professional, and portable digital storage. It combines a unique blend of the most advanced storage technologies with unrivalled ease-of-use, all in a sleek, world’s-smallest package, measuring seven inches square by less than two inches tall and weighing less than three pounds. Drobo invented a patent-pending “carrierless” design, which allows up to four 2.5” drives to be easily inserted into a Drobo Mini without the need for any additional drive carriers or screws. The benefit to the customer is not only the ease of drive insertion and removal, but also flexibility; because the design accommodates a common industry drive size, customers are free to choose the drive vendor, type (HDD or SSD), capacity, speed and price that best meets their needs.

Since the Drobo Mini is portable, it features a ruggedized design that allows users to transport it with drives inside. In addition to being the first Drobo to offer this capability, the Drobo Mini features a custom miniature power supply and an optional carrying case, making it the ideal storage for professionals who travel extensively.

Both the Drobo 5D and Drobo Mini include industry-first SSD acceleration – utilizing the performance benefits of solid state drives (SSDs) and the capacity benefits of hard disk drives (HDDs) to deliver an automated, no-compromise system. In addition to supporting SSDs in any of their drive bays, both units include an additional bay that will accommodate a small-form-factor SSD to achieve significant performance boosts while making all drive bays available for high-capacity HDDs.

The products also support both lightning-fast Thunderbolt (2 ports) and USB 3.0 connectivity, an industry first for storage arrays, that will provide flexibility to both Mac and Windows users. The two Thunderbolt ports allow customers to easily daisy-chain devices to accommodate massive growth, and the USB 3.0 port ensures compatibility to millions of USB systems.

Along with SSD acceleration and Thunderbolt / USB 3.0 interfaces, the new Drobo products have been completely redesigned from the ground up with new hardware and software architectures. These enhancements provide a significant increase in processing capability and several optimizations to BeyondRAID that will increase baseline performance by at least five times – prior to the addition of SSDs – easily making the new Drobo 5D and Drobo Mini the fastest storage arrays in their class.

Today LaCie announced a new 2-bay network-attached storage solution (NAS) that delivers the ideal combination of speed and security for small businesses – the LaCie 2big NAS, design by Neil Poulton.

CDW Review - LaCie 2big NAS 008_thumb[5]

Powered by a 2GHz processor and improved file system, the 2big NAS delivers speeds of up to 100MB/s, ensuring employees can share files from any PC, Mac, or Linux workstation.

“According to data from Research and Markets, network storage is growing in excess of 30% annually, increasing the demands placed on network storage devices,” said Erwan Girard, Professional Business Unit Manager at LaCie. “The LaCie 2big NAS was developed to scale with the needs of SOHO users, delivering fast file sharing and data security, the two most critical factors for a small business.”

Fast Collaboration

In a data-dependant world, small offices can’t afford delays in workflow. The 2big NAS supports non-stop data accessibility and collaboration thanks to its 2Ghz processor and LaCie NAS OS 2 software. It delivers enough storage capacity and bandwidth to back up multiple workstations, share large files and work on projects concurrently.

Formidable Data Security

Data multiplies by the second, so office administrators and IT professionals must ensure all digital assets are backed up and secure. The LaCie 2big NAS offers multiple levels of security including RAID 1 for data mirroring. Coupled with its hot-swappable drives, a failed disk can be replaced with no interruption, no data loss and without needing to turn off the device.

The LaCie 2big NAS ensures a complete backup of any Linux, PC or Mac workstation. Choose from the popular Time Machine and Windows 7 Backup software, or the included LaCie backup software. Consistent automatic backup means users can restore lost files instantly.

What’s more, LaCie’s NAS OS 2 dashboard makes it easy for businesses to back up the 2big NAS automatically, for added data security and peace of mind. Wizards with presets make advanced tasks such as RAID management, user management and NAS-to-NAS backups so easy that you don’t need an IT degree. With just a few clicks users can back up the 2big NAS onto a direct-attached external hard drive, or schedule a nightly backup onto a NAS in a different location.

Remote accessibility

Complementary to fast file sharing and data security is instant access to data. The 2big NAS allows employees to access important files anywhere where there is an Internet connection. They can even download the free iOS app – LaCie MyNAS – to access files from an iPhone or iPad.

Energy Savings

The LaCie 2big NAS saves businesses money by allowing full control of its energy usage. Users can schedule shutdown and restart during optimal business hours to boost efficiency. Plus, the LaCie 2big NAS is now ten times more energy efficient when in deep sleep mode. And, thanks to the wake-on-LAN protocol, users can access the 2big NAS from deep sleep without being next to the system.

The LaCie 2big NAS is available in 0TB and 8TB capacities through the LaCie Online Store, LaCie PROgram+ Partners and LaCie PROgram+ Resellers starting at £259.00. For more product information, visit www.lacie.com.
