New research reveals that close to 500,000 people live in homes with more than 15 devices connected to the internet

BT has launched a new range of connectivity products that allow users to connect their devices to the internet however, wherever and whenever they like at home. From Broadband Extenders to Wi-Fi Home Hotspot Kits, the new range includes everything needed to connect Smart TVs, Games Consoles, Laptops, Smartphones and Tablets to the internet and enjoy content on demand all around the home.

This range of products is designed to address the development in internet enabled devices in the home. The new study from BT has revealed the average connected household spends nearly 10 hours per day online, which could equate to each person in the household spending 15 years of their life online. Coupled with this is a rise in connected device ownership, with 500,000 people living in homes that have more than 15 internet enabled devices. This growth is increasing demand for connectivity products that enable customers to make better use of their broadband more widely around their home.

17% of people now have a smart TV in their household, although 20% of these are not making the most of these products and have not connected them to the internet. Over a fifth (21%) of people who do not connect theirsmart TV to the internet say this is because their TV is too far away from their router. A BT Broadband Extender would easily solve this problem in a matter of seconds without trailing cables around your home.

The need to maximise broadband connections in the home is also driven by consumers’ need to get online anywhere and everywhere. Seven in ten (71%) say people in their household connect to the internet from their bedroom with more than one in ten (12%) saying they connect to the internet from the bathroom.

The trend for connected homes appears to be one that is set to rise as households evolve with younger generations. Nearly a third (30%) of 18-24 year old report their home as having between six and eight connected devices, compared to a national average of just 17%.

Using the research BT has split the nation’s households into five typologies based on internet consumption. Over a third (33%) of the population falls into the “Passive Diggs” typology, with just one to two connected devices. At the most active end of the spectrum are the “Power Pad”, which account for a fifth (20%) of households – these fully networked households have six or more internet enabled devices and spend more than five hours online a day.

Erik Raphael, Consumer Devices Director, BT said “The proliferation of connected devices in the home, whether it be for TV, gaming, social media or searching the web means that people want to access their broadband all around the home. To cater for this growth BT is launching a range of connectivity devices to give people wired and wi-fi access wherever theyneed it most with a series of broadband and wi-fi extenders.”

LG is bringing popular family-friendly video games Skylanders Battlegrounds and Where’s My Mickey? to its CINEMA 3D Smart TV platform. Demonstrated for the first time at IFA 2013, the fun, family-friendly titles can be played using the intuitive LG Magic Remote. These games will be made available this holiday season in the LG Smart TV Game World app store.

Where’s My Mickey? is a spin-off of Disney’s popular physics-based game, Where’s My Water?, and features one of the world’s most iconic animated characters, Mickey Mouse. Players guide Mickey through a variety of entertaining story-based episodes, complete with appearances by other loveable Disney favorites, including Goofy. The interactive LG Magic Remote adds to the enjoyment, allowing players to control Mickey via pointing, clicking and dragging.

LG Electronics (LG) will unveil its new CINEMA 3D Smart TV lineup at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. The 2013 lineup offers easier content access and sharing along with an updated Magic Remote for a simplified, intuitive user experience (UX). A variety of models and sizes will be on display at CES, including LG’s awe-inspiring 84-inch Ultra HD and 55-inch OLED TVs.

Smart Control: Simple and Intuitive

LG offers the very definition of Smart Control with its enhanced Smart Home and Magic Remote. The new Smart Home onscreen interface featuring My Interest Cards – a special folders for apps and other content – provides easy, quick access to what’s trending on news sites as well as up-to-the-minute weather information. My Interest Cards can be customized according to the needs and preferences of the user.

The Magic Remote has been redesigned to fine-tune content and menu navigation, making interaction as simple and intuitive as possible. Smart Sharing

The enhanced SmartShareTM feature offers users the ability to mirror or transfer content from smart devices to LG Smart TVs via a multitude of connectivity options, including WiDi and Miracast. The 2013 lineup will enhance inter-device sharing further by implementing Tag On. This feature immediately connects two devices for speedy media sharing. To use Tag On, the user simply holds a smartphone or other NFC-enabled device against the NFC sticker on a CINEMA 3D Smart TV. The 2013 lineup also supports LG Cloud, which allows the user to remotely stream high-quality content from practically any location.

Smart TV users have a steadily growing selection of content from which to choose. And it is so slim that from across a room it was difficult to make out the Ultra Slim Box against the TV stand (this picture shows it better).

I was very impressed with the Ultra Slim Box. It really is slim! It is also very quiet and even after having been running for several hours it was still pretty cool to the touch, which isn’t something you can say for a lot of other boxes.

The Echostar Ultra Slim Box will be available by the end of this month. Pricing has not yet been finalised, but expect it to be between £250 and £300, from Amazon and John Lewis. Amazon are currently showing it as a pre-order for £259.99.

LG and Amazon announced today that LOVEFiLM will be coming to LG’s Smart TV platform very soon.

Amazon’s LOVEFiLM today announced it is working with global electronics company LG to bring LOVEFiLM’s video streaming service, LOVEFiLM Instant, to LG’s award winning Smart TV platform. This deal will give UK film fans yet another option to watch LOVEFiLM’s vast range of films and TV episodes instantly on their big screen.

The LG Smart TV platform already boasts over 250 applications in the UK, with access to almost limitless content on demand via the Internet. The addition of LOVEFiLM Instant, which provides a unique offering of instantly streamed films and TV episodes, is LG’s first ever film and TV subscription streaming application.

LOVEFiLM recently introduced an unlimited streaming-only package which provides access to films and TV shows via LOVEFiLM Instant for an introductory price of 4.99 per month.

LOVEFiLM members watching movies via LOVEFiLM Instant on LG TVs will have instant access to thousands of titles, with a continually growing library.

Exclusive streaming access to titles such as sci-fi action sequel Terminator Salvation, RED starring Helen Mirren and Bruce Willis, Batman sequel The Dark Knight, breakout comedy The Hangover and mystery thriller Unknown, will be available from launch.

Forthcoming titles on LOVEFiLM Instant will include Source Code starring Jake Gyllenhaal and family animation Gnomeo & Juliet.

The application will also enable members to manage their movie rental list, rate movies, read reviews and search movies by cast and crew. Members can also find films within the bespoke collections via LG TVs, which will make it easier than ever to discover new favourites.

Functionality is further enhanced by LG’s Magic Motion Remote, which is controlled by movements and gestures, instead of buttons.

CES wouldn’t be complete without Angry Birds – and TCL were showing off touch screen TV’s you could play Angry Birds on!

TCL Corporation, a leading Chinese consumer electronics manufacturer, started marketing its full line of TCL branded products and solutions for the first time in its corporate history at CES last week.

And to show off some of it’s touch screen technology, they were playing Angry Birds!

Here at CES, Samsung are showing of TV’s with their new Smart Interaction features, which means you can control your TV with your voice and with gestures, and even sign-in to the TV using facial recognition. UWHS had a demon and here is the video.

The show floor at CES is not only heaving with people, it is very noisy, so Samsung had some fairly sound proof booth set up for the demonstration.

Smart Interaction enables you to use voice, motion and your face to control your TV, be it changing the channel, the volume, or clicking links on a web page.

It acts very much like Microsoft’s Kinect device – you use the features by saying “Hi TV” then whatever you want to say or do afterwards.

There is even a Bluetooth connected IR blaster that can be used to extended the controls to other devices.

There is a camera built into the top of the TV screen, it is very small and discreet so no large and obvious devices here!

The demo was very impressive, especially given the location and surround movement and noise of CES. We look forward to seeing more of this technology in the coming months.

Today at CES Samsung, the UK’s number one TV brand with the most awarded TV range, announces new milestones for its Smart TV platform, Samsung Apps, as well as new apps and services that deliver even richer entertainment options for the largest screen in the home.

With more than 1,400 apps available and average daily downloads of 50,000 worldwide, Samsung Apps has become the Smart TV platform of choice for application developers and premium content brands.

Consumers have increasingly turned to their TVs for streaming video content, as well as for apps that offer interactive and customised content that cater for their passion for music, sports, fitness, social networking or news.

Globally Samsung expects to hit 15 million app downloads by January 2012, a 50 per cent increase from its previous milestone of 10 million, set in October 2011.

Robert King, Head of Consumer Electronics at Samsung UK, said, “With over 80% of consumers interested in Smart TV, there is a growing need to extend the availability of content and apps to other screens in the home. Samsung’s connected ecosystem, including Smart TV’s, Smartphones, Smart Cameras and even Smart Appliances can meet this need, while our platform has evolved dramatically in 2012 to further enhance the experience.”

Samsung has redesigned its Smart Hub user interface to offer a much more intuitive experience. The new Smart Hub is in full HD and is streamlined to offer users a more intuitive way to search and discover content via Smart Interactions. Consumers can navigate the interface using Voice Control, Motion Control and Face Recognition for a seamless experience never before available on a TV.
The new Smart Hub also offers true multi-tasking capabilities – users can switch between web pages thanks to a new tabbed web browser, toggle between apps and download multiple apps simultaneously.

In addition, Samsung’s new AllShare Play allows content to be shared across DLNA-certified devices. AllShare Play offers web storage so users can upload and share multimedia content between devices such as TVs, cameras, smartphones, laptops and PCs, regardless of where they are in the world.

Rich Content and Signature Services that Push the Boundaries of HomeEntertainment
To help bring the family back together in the living room, Samsung is launching several first-of-its-kind signature services that redefine what the TV can do for consumers.

Samsung’s Family Story allows families to share content through cloud-based storage. Family members can share photos, create slide shows, post memos and schedule events. They can access this content in and outside the home through their smartphones, tablets, PCs and Samsung Smart TVs. Device compatibility will also be expanded to include LCD refrigerators and digital cameras in the future. Family members can also share photos in real-time by pushing photos to each member’s TV screen through a ‘live chat’ feature, so keeping in touch with families has become much easier no matter where loved ones are.

Fitness helps users track their fitness progress through indoor and outdoor activities in a more organised way.  In addition to a diverse range of fitness content, users can connect their Samsung smartphone to their Smart TV using a mobile fitness app. They can also connect a Withings WiFi scale to their Samsung Smart TVs to help them track and monitor their weight progress. With selected apps, the TV’s built-in camera will create a virtual mirror so users they can check their exercise poses against the instructor.

Families can also access a variety of educational video-on-demand content through Kids, which includes a feature where parents can reward their children with stickers and monitor their TV time.

Here at CES 2012, Lenovo have launch their K91 Smart TV and it runs Android 4.0.

As the world’s first smart TV powered by QualComm’s 8060 Snapdragon dual core CPU, the K91 is also the world’s first smart TV running the Android 4.0 operating system – which will revolutionize technology in the living room. Its smart “Sandwich” UI unites three major smart TV functions, including Video On Demand (VOD), Internet applications and traditional TV programs. The online HD VOD is tailored to an individual consumer’s viewing history, and delivers the best picture and audio quality with 3D FPR technology delivering flicker-free video on a full HD IPS panel at 240hz with SRS TruSurround. Internet applications include thousands of choices from the Android Market and Lenovo Store, including console games.

Additional smart TV features include voice control with natural language processing and speech recognition technology, allowing viewers to use voice commands to control the remote. Video interaction is even possible with the built-in 5MP webcam, which integrates face recognition technology for security benefits and advanced parental control. With cloud support, consumers can access their favorite songs and videos with ease, share files between the TV and their tablet, smartphone or PC, and even control the TV via tablet and smartphone.

The K91 smart TV are available immediately in China. Lenovo will be releasing these products worldwide at a later date.
