New research reveals that close to 500,000 people live in homes with more than 15 devices connected to the internet

BT has launched a new range of connectivity products that allow users to connect their devices to the internet however, wherever and whenever they like at home. From Broadband Extenders to Wi-Fi Home Hotspot Kits, the new range includes everything needed to connect Smart TVs, Games Consoles, Laptops, Smartphones and Tablets to the internet and enjoy content on demand all around the home.

BT Logo

This range of products is designed to address the development in internet enabled devices in the home. The new study from BT has revealed the average connected household spends nearly 10 hours per day online, which could equate to each person in the household spending 15 years of their life online. Coupled with this is a rise in connected device ownership, with 500,000 people living in homes that have more than 15 internet enabled devices. This growth is increasing demand for connectivity products that enable customers to make better use of their broadband more widely around their home.

17% of people now have a smart TV in their household, although 20% of these are not making the most of these products and have not connected them to the internet. Over a fifth (21%) of people who do not connect theirsmart TV to the internet say this is because their TV is too far away from their router. A BT Broadband Extender would easily solve this problem in a matter of seconds without trailing cables around your home.

The need to maximise broadband connections in the home is also driven by consumers’ need to get online anywhere and everywhere. Seven in ten (71%) say people in their household connect to the internet from their bedroom with more than one in ten (12%) saying they connect to the internet from the bathroom.

The trend for connected homes appears to be one that is set to rise as households evolve with younger generations. Nearly a third (30%) of 18-24 year old report their home as having between six and eight connected devices, compared to a national average of just 17%.

Using the research BT has split the nation’s households into five typologies based on internet consumption. Over a third (33%) of the population falls into the “Passive Diggs” typology, with just one to two connected devices. At the most active end of the spectrum are the “Power Pad”, which account for a fifth (20%) of households – these fully networked households have six or more internet enabled devices and spend more than five hours online a day.

Erik Raphael, Consumer Devices Director, BT said “The proliferation of connected devices in the home, whether it be for TV, gaming, social media or searching the web means that people want to access their broadband all around the home. To cater for this growth BT is launching a range of connectivity devices to give people wired and wi-fi access wherever theyneed it most with a series of broadband and wi-fi extenders.”

BT’s new classification of GB homes splits the nation into the following groups:

  • Passive Diggs 33%
  • One to two internet enabled devices in household
  •  Catch Up Crib18%
  • Three to five internet enabled devices in household
  • Up to five hours spent online daily
  • Active Abode 25%
  • Three to five internet enabled devices in household
  • Over five hours spent online daily
  • Hot House 4%
  • Six or more internet enabled devices in household
  • Up to five hours spent online daily
  • Power Pad 20%
  • Six or more internet enabled devices in household
  • Over five hours spent online daily

LG is bringing popular family-friendly video games Skylanders Battlegrounds and Where’s My Mickey? to its CINEMA 3D Smart TV platform. Demonstrated for the first time at IFA 2013, the fun, family-friendly titles can be played using the intuitive LG Magic Remote. These games will be made available this holiday season in the LG Smart TV Game World app store.

LG Skylanders Battleground
“At LG, we’re committed to providing LG CINEMA 3D Smart TV users with a truly diverse range of entertainment options, suitable for the entire family,” said
Richard Choi, senior vice president of the Smart Business Center at LG Electronics. “These entertaining titles deliver an incredible gaming experience
thanks to the fantastic picture quality and large screens of our Smart TV lineup. And the games we’ll be bringing to our platform will take advantage of LG’s easy-to-use Magic Remote, which makes the gaming experience much more like a dedicated game console.”

Skylanders Battlegrounds is an action role-playing game experience featuring inventive team-up gameplay in which players must pit the fighting skills and magical abilities of their favorite characters against powerful enemies. Specially adapted and optimized for LG CINEMA 3D Smart TVs, Skylanders Battlegrounds will enable fans of the franchise to play with any character from the entire collection of Skylanders figures. The motion control capabilities of LG’s Magic Remote will help to transport the player into the beautifully rendered battlegrounds of the unique world of Skylands.

Where’s My Mickey? is a spin-off of Disney’s popular physics-based game, Where’s My Water?, and features one of the world’s most iconic animated characters, Mickey Mouse. The interactive LG Magic Remote adds to the enjoyment, allowing players to control Mickey via pointing, clicking and dragging.

The third installment in the series, Where’s My Perry?, will also debut on LG CINEMA 3D Smart TV along with Where’s My Mickey?.

Millions of people can now transform their normal TV into an internet-connected ‘smart’ TV for just £9.99 with the launch of the NOW TV Box.

Available from today at nowtv.com, the compact and easy-to-use box connects your TV wirelessly to the internet.  Once connected, homes with the NOW TV box will enjoy convenient and contract-free access to BBC iPlayer,  Demand 5, BBC News App and Sky News, plus NOW TV – offering instant access to Sky Sports and Sky Movies. They can also access other popular online services such as Facebook and Spotify – all delivered over broadband to the big screen TV.

Despite the explosion in connected devices such as Sky set-top boxes, games consoles and connected TVs, there are still up to tens of millions of regular TVs in the UK that cannot currently connect to the internet.  The NOW TV box provides an affordable and simple way for any broadband-connected home to join the online TV revolution.

Until now, unless receiving catch-up as part of a pay TV subscription, consumers have needed to pay tens or even hundreds of pounds to purchase internet-streaming devices to watch catch-up TV on a regular TV.  With the new NOW TV Box, for less than a tenner, customers can access the best in catch-up TV.  But on top of this, they also have the opportunity to upgrade to access live sport and on demand movies from NOW TV.
Smaller than a pub beer mat, the NOW TV Box measures in at a trim 84mm x 84mm x 24mm and can be up and running in minutes. Simply plug the box into your TV set via the HDMI cable provided, connect to your wireless internet connection and you’re away.

The box launches as new research from NOW TV reveals the nation’s ever-increasing appetite to watch what they want, when they want.  Over two thirds of Brits have now taken advantage of on demand services on their main TV sets – whether via Smart TVs or other connected devices, with  two in five of us  streaming must-see shows or settling down to a movie on a weekly basis.

Over half the nation (56%) use more traditional internet-connected devices such as tablets, smartphones or laptops to access TV on demand whilst in the home.  For these people, the NOW TV Box will offer a simple and affordable way to enjoy catch-up TV, live sport and on demand movies on the big screen.

From launch, the NOW TV Box will let people access:

  • Sky Sports: Experience the best sporting action from Sky Sports with the Sky Sports Day Pass. In the next month alone, sports fans can enjoy the climax of The Ashes series, the return of the Premier League and Football League, Formula 1® Belgium Grand Prix™, the start of Andy Murray’s defence of the US Open title and much more, across 6 channels all for just £9.99 a day.
  • Sky Movies: Sign up for a Sky Movies Pass to access hundreds of films from Sky Movies – the UK’s most popular subscription service – including more of the latest and biggest movies 12 months before Netflix or LOVEFiLM Instant. New customers can also take advantage of a 30 day free trial of the Sky Movies Pass and enjoy the likes of Skyfall, The Dark Knight Rises and Argo in the next month.
  • Sky News: Stay up-to-date with all the latest breaking news from Sky News. Access a 24/7 live feed of Sky News’ award-winning coverage including all breaking news from home and abroad, as well as dedicated business, political and entertainment coverage.  In addition, catch up on specific stories at any time of the day via an exclusive on demand news library.
  • BBC iPlayer: The BBC’s popular video on-demand service which received 2.32bn programme requests in 2012 gives you the option to catch up on your favourite BBC programmes when you want to – and now on your TV set through the NOW TV Box.
  • BBC News app: Giving viewers access to BBC news reports, interviews and videos at the touch of a button on their TV.
  • Demand 5: Catch-up on a wide selection of Channel 5 shows for at least 7 days after they first broadcast.
  • Spotify, Facebook and flickr: Listen to music, catch up with friends and even share your photos all through your TV set.

Overtime there will be even more for people to enjoy with the addition of new content and apps to the NOW TV Box.

NOW TV is already available on PC, Mac, iPhone, iPad, selected Android smartphones, Xbox, PS3, YouView and Roku.

LG Electronics (LG) will unveil its new CINEMA 3D Smart TV lineup at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. The 2013 lineup offers easier content access and sharing along with an updated Magic Remote for a simplified, intuitive user experience (UX). A variety of models and sizes will be on display at CES, including LG’s awe-inspiring 84-inch Ultra HD and 55-inch OLED TVs.

Smart Control: Simple and Intuitive

LG offers the very definition of Smart Control with its enhanced Smart Home and Magic Remote. The new Smart Home onscreen interface featuring My Interest Cards – a special folders for apps and other content – provides easy, quick access to what’s trending on news sites as well as up-to-the-minute weather information. My Interest Cards can be customized according to the needs and preferences of the user.

The Magic Remote has been redesigned to fine-tune content and menu navigation, making interaction as simple and intuitive as possible. The device still incorporates the fundamental control capabilities of earlier Magic Remotes – point, wheel, gesture and voice recognition. At CES, LG will demonstrate Voice Mate, an enhanced version of the company’s voice control technology capable of recognizing the natural flow of language. The Voice Mate feature offers a new voice search option that simultaneously filters search results from all corners of the LG Smart TV platform – VoD services, search engines, external devices and more. LG’s Smart Control with Magic Remote is like no other system, enabling users to experiment and discover the most comfortable way to enjoy their LG Smart TV.

Smart Sharing

The enhanced SmartShareTM feature offers users the ability to mirror or transfer content from smart devices to LG Smart TVs via a multitude of connectivity options, including WiDi and Miracast. The 2013 lineup will enhance inter-device sharing further by implementing Tag On. This feature immediately connects two devices for speedy media sharing. To use Tag On, the user simply holds a smartphone or other NFC-enabled device against the NFC sticker on a CINEMA 3D Smart TV. The 2013 lineup also supports LG Cloud, which allows the user to remotely stream high-quality content from practically any location.

Smarter Discovery in Sea of Content

Smart TV users have a steadily growing selection of content from which to choose. But how can Smart TV users easily find what they want in a vast sea of Video-on-Demand (VoD) and live broadcasts from multiple sources? The LG Smart TV offers a solution to the problem via an advanced recommendation function called On Now. The convenient service suggests trending VoD and broadcast content. Results pop-up with handy thumbnail images, making it faster and easier for the viewer to make a content selection.

With a vast array of movie, lifestyle, gaming and 3D choices, consumers looking for international or local content can quickly find what they want on their LG CINEMA 3D Smart TVs. Partnerships with a growing list of providers from around the world, including local broadcasters and subscription programming services, allow LG to keep its content offerings relevant and fresh.

LG CINEMA 3D Smart TVs deliver a smooth user experience and superior picture quality thanks to an upgraded central processing unit (CPU) and graphic processing unit (GPU). CPU speeds are now 120 percent faster in several premium CINEMA 3D Smart TV models. Even more impressively, GPU speeds are now 300 percent faster, which translates to clearer images that enhance gaming, viewing and multitasking.

Magic Stand and CINEMA SCREEN Design

The new 2013 models embody LG’s minimalist CINEMA SCREEN Design. The TV’s bezels have been significantly reduced to provide a greater sense of immersion. The Magic Stand further enhances the effect, enabling the screen to appear as if floating. Both elegant and functional, the stand complements the screen without creating any visual distraction. This sleek formation effortlessly blends into any modern interior design scheme. The stand also features a convenient swivel and roller function, allowing the TV to be repositioned with ease.

Comfortable CINEMA 3D

LG’s CINEMA 3D Smart TVs employ Film Patterned Retarder (FPR) technology for superior 3D viewing comfort. This technology uses lightweight glasses to create a comfortable 3D viewing experience without the distracting flicker or crosstalk of active shutter-style glasses.

Eco-Friendly and Safe

LG’s CINEMA 3D Smart TV has won CES Innovations Awards for its superiority in hardware and software a number of times, including at the 2013 CES Innovations Awards. Another accolade was bestowed on the CINEMA 3D Smart TV lineup in December when the 55LA6900 model earned an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) from Underwriters Laboratories Inc. The 55LA6900 was singled out for its remarkable energy efficiency and eco-friendly qualities.

“LG always strives to provide the most engaging, most convenient user experience to consumers all over the globe,” said Havis Kwon, President and CEO of the LG Home Entertainment Company. “We have been singularly uncompromising, both in developing and improving the LG Smart TV platform. As a result, we are confident the UX our 2013 models will shatter all expectations and demonstrate that LG has moved the medium of Smart TV forward.”

Samsung announced two new smart TV’s, both OLED based and with the ability to be controlled with gestures.  Read on for details.

Samsung announced two new smart TV’s, both OLED based and with the ability to be controlled with gestures.  Here is what they announced:

Worldwide TV leader showcases OLED TV delivering, new consumer experiences with Smart Content and Smart Interaction

Berlin, Germany 30th August, 2012 Today at IFA 2012, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a global leader in digital media and digital convergence technologies, showcased its much-anticipated 55-inch ES9500 OLED TV, featuring unrivalled picture quality, luxurious design and the new Samsung Multi View function. Also on show was the premium 75-inch LED ES9000 Smart TV with rose-gold bezel and the latest Smart Content. The Samsung Smart Hub demoed Angry Birds, played for the first time on Samsung Smart TV using Gesture Control.

Samsung’s IFA exhibit contains the “World’s Biggest OLED Experience”, comprising of twenty 55-inch OLED TVs, nine of which are suspended from the ceiling and rotate to create a captivating visual effect. This demonstration highlights OLED’s incredibly vivid picture quality and thin design. Visitors can experience first hand the superb OLED technologies, such as Samsung Multi View and crosstalk free OLED 3D, and glimpse the new OLED logo, an icon for the TV’s ability to reproduce intense, true-to-life colours and varying degrees of blacks.

Seven Years of Industry Leadership and Innovation

For the seventh consecutive year, Samsung championed its unrivalled leadership in Europe and worldwide by maintaining its leading position in the TV industry. This year, Samsung’s popularity was evident with the company’s Smart TV revenue holding 42.9 percent market share during the first half in Europe, while its 3D TV revenue held 44.7 percent market share. Samsung’s overall flat-panel TV revenue, including LCD and plasma TVs, represented 35 percent market share in Europe leading to the position as the No.1 TV maker worldwide for seven years running.

ES9500 OLED TV with Samsung Multi View

The long-anticipated Samsung ES9500 OLED TV, unveiled in Europe for the first time, marks the beginning of a new era in the TV industry. The 55-inch ES9500 OLED TV delivers ultimate picture quality through enhanced contrast ratio, richer colours and faster response time.

The ES9500’s self-emitting sub-pixels can individually reproduce life-like colours, creating a more immersive experience that draws the viewer into the action on the screen. OLED technology is also able to differentiate between varying degrees of blacks, enabling its contrast ratio to deliver unparalleled detail in shadows, shapes and subtle colours even in the darkest of scenes.

With no need for a separate light source, the ES9500 offers a fast response time, eliminating motion blur. That incredible speed translates into action scenes and sports games that are amazingly life-like and 3D experiences with virtually no crosstalk.

The ES9500’s minimalist design features a super-slim bezel, thin screen and distinctive back. The set gets thinner toward the edges of the metallic frame, and the small camera embedded in the bezel disappears when not in use, adding a further touch of elegance. Wires and connections can be neatly tucked away in the TV’s centre stand.

Samsung’s OLED TV supports the new Samsung Multi View, thanks to the TV’s high processing speeds and innovative wireless sound system. This feature allows two people to watch two different shows at the same time on the same full screen—with the ability to hear each programme separately using Samsung Multi View 3D glasses with integrated earphones. With Samsung Multi View, there are no restrictions on the type of content users watch, so the possibilities are endless.

75-inch LED ES9000 Smart TV

Samsung’s 75-inch LED ES9000 Smart TV combines the best in design and performance to deliver a view unlike any other. Created with consumer demand for larger TVs and a more engaging viewing experience in mind, the ES9000’s design is so thin and unobtrusive, it allows users to become fully immersed in the stunning picture quality. Featuring a luxurious rose-gold finish 7.9mm frame and hidden push-up camera, the ES9000 offers the essence of sophistication and premium design along with the best of Samsung’s Smart TV features.

Both Samsung’s OLED TV and 75-inch LED ES9000 Smart TV also support Smart Interaction, Smart Content and Smart Evolution—features that were introduced to Samsung’s future-proofed, flagship Smart TVs early this year.

The World’s First Motion-Controlled Angry Birds Experience for Smart TV

Building on a heritage of killer Apps with the most robust Smart Content in the industry, Samsung is the first to bring Angry Birds, one of the world’s most loved games, to Samsung Smart TV with Gesture Control. Consumers can play the game like never before with Smart Interaction, using natural hand gestures to control the game and activate the unique skills of each bird on a bigger screen, creating an experience that is more fun compared to the mobile version of the game.

Samsung Smart TV brings family members together to enjoy a unique shared experience on a large screen with superior picture quality, while Smart Interaction technology adds a new level of interaction to Angry Birds that truly immerses each player in the game. Angry Birds is just one great example of the new experiences made possible by Smart Content, which gives consumers the power to use television with the same ease, flexibility and seamless connectivity shared by all other Samsung devices. To date, Samsung’s 2,000 Smart Content apps worldwide—nearly 1,000 of which are available in Europe—have been downloaded more than 45 million times.

Samsung also introduced a Samsung Smart TV with Google TV at IFA 2012, expanding the premium content and services available through Samsung Apps. Samsung Smart TV with Google TV will enhance the Smart TV experience for consumers seeking more options and seamless connectivity.

Samsung Smart TVs also feature Smart Evolution, which eases purchasing concerns by providing easy access to future technologies using the Samsung Smart Evolution kit. The European Image and Sound Association (EISA) recently awarded Samsung’s ES8000 series top accolades as the “European Future Proof TV” for making it remarkably simple for consumers to make their TVs “smarter” year to year.

Google TV integrated into the TV, the ability to control the TV with motion and gestures, and OLED technology in an attractive package make this line of TV’s really interesting!

And it is so slim that from across a room it was difficult to make out the Ultra Slim Box against the TV stand (this picture shows it better).

I was very impressed with the Ultra Slim Box. It really is slim! It is also very quiet and even after having been running for several hours it was still pretty cool to the touch, which isn’t something you can say for a lot of other boxes.

The Echostar Ultra Slim Box will be available by the end of this month. Pricing has not yet been finalised, but expect it to be between £250 and £300, from Amazon and John Lewis. Amazon are currently showing it as a pre-order for £259.99.

LG and Amazon announced today that LOVEFiLM will be coming to LG’s Smart TV platform very soon.

UWHS - LG Smart TV at CES

This is what LG posted on their blog:

The LG Smart TV platform already boasts over 250 applications in the UK, with access to almost limitless content on demand via the Internet. The addition of LOVEFiLM Instant, which provides a unique offering of instantly streamed films and TV episodes, is LG’s first ever film and TV subscription streaming application.

LOVEFiLM members watching movies via LOVEFiLM Instant on LG TVs will have instant access to thousands of titles, with a continually growing library.

CES wouldn’t be complete without Angry Birds – and TCL were showing off touch screen TV’s you could play Angry Birds on!

UWHS - TCL Smart TV - Angry Birds - 3

TCL Corporation, a leading Chinese consumer electronics manufacturer, started marketing its full line of TCL branded products and solutions for the first time in its corporate history at CES last week.

And to show off some of it’s touch screen technology, they were playing Angry Birds!

Here at CES, Samsung are showing of TV’s with their new Smart Interaction features, which means you can control your TV with your voice and with gestures, and even sign-in to the TV using facial recognition. UWHS had a demon and here is the video.

UWHS - Samsungs Smart Interaction TV - 6

The show floor at CES is not only heaving with people, it is very noisy, so Samsung had some fairly sound proof booth set up for the demonstration.

Smart Interaction enables you to use voice, motion and your face to control your TV, be it changing the channel, the volume, or clicking links on a web page.

It acts very much like Microsoft’s Kinect device – you use the features by saying “Hi TV” then whatever you want to say or do afterwards.

There is even a Bluetooth connected IR blaster that can be used to extended the controls to other devices.

There is a camera built into the top of the TV screen, it is very small and discreet so no large and obvious devices here!

The demo was very impressive, especially given the location and surround movement and noise of CES. We look forward to seeing more of this technology in the coming months.

Today at CES Samsung, the UK’s number one TV brand with the most awarded TV range, announces new milestones for its Smart TV platform, Samsung Apps, as well as new apps and services that deliver even richer entertainment options for the largest screen in the home.

With more than 1,400 apps available and average daily downloads of 50,000 worldwide, Samsung Apps has become the Smart TV platform of choice for application developers and premium content brands.

Consumers have increasingly turned to their TVs for streaming video content, as well as for apps that offer interactive and customised content that cater for their passion for music, sports, fitness, social networking or news.

Globally Samsung expects to hit 15 million app downloads by January 2012, a 50 per cent increase from its previous milestone of 10 million, set in October 2011.

Robert King, Head of Consumer Electronics at Samsung UK, said, “With over 80% of consumers interested in Smart TV, there is a growing need to extend the availability of content and apps to other screens in the home. Samsung’s connected ecosystem, including Smart TV’s, Smartphones, Smart Cameras and even Smart Appliances can meet this need, while our platform has evolved dramatically in 2012 to further enhance the experience.”

Simple, Intuitive Interface for Samsung Smart Hub
Samsung has redesigned its Smart Hub user interface to offer a much more intuitive experience. The new Smart Hub is in full HD and is streamlined to offer users a more intuitive way to search and discover content via Smart Interactions. Consumers can navigate the interface using Voice Control, Motion Control and Face Recognition for a seamless experience never before available on a TV.
The new Smart Hub also offers true multi-tasking capabilities – users can switch between web pages thanks to a new tabbed web browser, toggle between apps and download multiple apps simultaneously.

In addition, Samsung’s new AllShare Play allows content to be shared across DLNA-certified devices. AllShare Play offers web storage so users can upload and share multimedia content between devices such as TVs, cameras, smartphones, laptops and PCs, regardless of where they are in the world.

Rich Content and Signature Services that Push the Boundaries of HomeEntertainment
To help bring the family back together in the living room, Samsung is launching several first-of-its-kind signature services that redefine what the TV can do for consumers.

Samsung’s Family Story allows families to share content through cloud-based storage. Family members can share photos, create slide shows, post memos and schedule events. They can access this content in and outside the home through their smartphones, tablets, PCs and Samsung Smart TVs. Device compatibility will also be expanded to include LCD refrigerators and digital cameras in the future. Family members can also share photos in real-time by pushing photos to each member’s TV screen through a ‘live chat’ feature, so keeping in touch with families has become much easier no matter where loved ones are.

Fitness helps users track their fitness progress through indoor and outdoor activities in a more organised way.  In addition to a diverse range of fitness content, users can connect their Samsung smartphone to their Smart TV using a mobile fitness app. They can also connect a Withings WiFi scale to their Samsung Smart TVs to help them track and monitor their weight progress. With selected apps, the TV’s built-in camera will create a virtual mirror so users they can check their exercise poses against the instructor.

Families can also access a variety of educational video-on-demand content through Kids, which includes a feature where parents can reward their children with stickers and monitor their TV time.

Roku are famous for making small streaming boxes, but now they have announced a streaming stick for use with SmartTVs!

Don’t rush looking for the Streaming Stick just yet though as it is not scheduled to appear until late 2012. No news yet on pricing either, but it is expected to be a similar price to their current boxes.

Here is the press release:

Roku Breaks the Smart TV Mold

New Roku Streaming Stick Integrates “Smart” Experience into TVs Instantly

Saratoga, Calif. – Jan. 4, 2012 – Building on the success of the award-winning Roku streaming players, Roku® today unveiled a new solution to make a better Smart TV. The new Roku Streaming StickTM is a cordless device about the size of a standard USB flash drive that will plug into a TV to instantly transform it into a Smart TV. The Roku Streaming Stick will feature built-in WiFi, processor, memory and software to deliver Roku’s growing collection of streaming entertainment. With these new Smart TVs, consumers will enjoy a fully integrated high-definition streaming experience.

“Insignia is proud to be among the first manufacturers to pair the Roku Streaming Stick with a TV,” said Scott Jacobi, Director of Exclusive Brands at Best Buy. “The Roku Streaming Stick provides an elegant and easy over-the-top streaming solution for customers who want the full experience of a Smart TV without adding an external set box, HDMI cable and power adapter to their TV. Insignia looks forward to rolling out our first MHL-enabled TVs compatible with the Roku Streaming Stick in 2012 at Best Buy.”

“Roku was the first to stream Netflix to the TV and since then has been applauded for delivering a first rate Netflix experience,” said Greg Peters, vice president at Netflix. “Now Roku is taking streaming innovation to the next level and giving consumers a seamless Smart TV experience. The Roku Streaming Stick is a great solution for Netflix because it allows us to deliver the Netflix experience found on the Roku platform to potentially any TV.”

Today’s Smart TVs become outdated in just a couple years because as software changes are made the hardware needs upgrading – that is if the software is even updated. That kind of short hardware product cycle is expected with a mobile device such as a smart phone, but consumers generally keep their TVs for six to eight years. By moving the streaming platform to a stick that’s easily replaceable, consumers no longer have to worry about their large-screen Smart TV becoming obsolete before its time.

“The Roku platform has been extremely successful as a stand-alone streaming device,” said Roku Founder and CEO Anthony Wood. “Extending the Roku streaming experience through the Roku Streaming Stick to Smart TVs is a natural next step for the market.”

“Smart TV manufacturers have struggled to find an application platform that sticks with consumers especially since software is not their area of expertise,” said Kurt Scherf, vice president and principal analyst at Parks Associates. “The Roku Streaming Stick is a game changer for the Smart TV market. It takes the leading streaming platform and integrates into the TV in a way that no one has been able to do The Roku Streaming Stick will not require any cables including a separate power source, and can be controlled by the TV remote. Like Roku players, it will deliver the more than 400 channels found on the Roku platform today and will benefit from regular, free software updates and channel enhancements.

The Roku Streaming Stick will be available this fall. It can be bundled with a TV in retail or sold separately for consumers to use with their own TVs.

The Roku Streaming Stick will plug into MHL-enabled HDMI ports on TVs. MHL is a new standard that uses the HDMI connector on TVs to deliver power and other critical elements for the streaming experience. MHL is currently adopted by nearly 100 hardware and manufacturing vendors including Nokia Corporation; Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.; Silicon Image, Inc.; Sony Corporation; and Toshiba Corporation who are joint founders of the MHL Consortium.

Roku is the leading streaming platform. Since launching the first Netflix streaming player in 2008, Roku has delivered entertainment to nearly 2.5 million streaming players in the U.S. Roku features more than 400 entertainment channels including Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, Hulu Plus, Pandora, Angry Birds and HBO GO. Award-winning Roku streaming players are renowned for their ease of use, value and selection of content. Roku players are sold through leading retailers in the U.S.

Roku is founded by Anthony Wood, inventor of the DVR. For more information about Roku, visit www.roku.com.
