Final Thoughts

The LeapPad3 is designed to provide a safe and fun experience for children aged 3 – 9 years old. If you had a previous LeapPad then you will notice that the LeapPad3 has been redesigned. It sleeker, lighter, has a quad-core processor and Wi-Fi and is designed to be handled by children, meaning LeapFrog have drop tested it so that if you drop it, unlike an iPad, it won’t shatter!

You get around 6 hours of constant use on the battery, and the LeapPad3 can be charged either from the charger or via USB (so you can charge it on the go).

The screen is a very clear 5” touchscreen and I found it to be very responsive.

And don’t worry about children seeing inappropriate content when surfing the web on the LeapPad3 as it uses LeapSearch powered by Zui. What that means is that only content that is appropriate is displayed, and that content has been approved by “learning experts”, so after watching that Sesame Street video you don’t have to worry about something else being shown!

There are well over 700 games and apps available for the LeapPad3, including games, eBooks and videos, so there should be something for everyone, and the games actually adapt to your child’s learning level.

You can even link up two LeapPad3’s using Pet Chat and Pet Pad Party, both of which are including with the LeapPad3, giving your child hours of fun, and you hours of peace and quiet.

There is also a 2MP front and rear camera which works well, and even the ability to record video at 480p. There is 4GB of on-board memory too.

The LeapPad3 works with both PC and Mac and is very easy to set up and use.

The LeapFrog LeapPad3 retails for £89.99 but as usual look around for a good deal. The LeapPad3 comes in either Green or Pink.

Final Thoughts

The Wikipad 7 isn’t a new release, in fact it has been available now since 2013, but there have recently been seem serious drops in price which makes it worth taking a look at.

The processor is the NVIDIA Tegra 3, so it’s not the latest and greatest (again, its been out a while) but with 12 cores it’s by no means a slouch either!

The screen gives a very clear image, although it’s not full 1080p, and it might take you a little while to get used the screen dimensions, but when using it in normal tablet mode it gives you that little bit extra screen for icons and applications.

Connectivity to a large screen TV or monitor it easy using a mini-HDMI cable, although there isn’t one in the box, but then given the new price for the Wikipad you can’t really complain.

As we mentioned earlier all the buttons on the Wikipad itself are on the top of the screen which makes it a lot easier when using the controller, which brings us nicely onto the controller. It’s rather big and hefty, and looks a little plasticy, but it does get the job done and it certainly makes it easier to play certain games than without it. I can imagine though that a few people might not take it outside the house given it’s size. The Wikipad also comes with a number of games preinstalled, and you can of course visit Google Play and buy or download more. Just be warned that there are some games out there that wont run very well due to the hardware requirements, and there are some games that are not compatible with the controller, so make sure you check before you buy. There is a button mapper app included on the Wikipad to help you map controls for other games, but this can be a little fiddly to get working, but it does work!

The battery life was pretty good – not the best on the market today, but then again remember it’s age and new price. That said you should be able to get some good gameplay times out of it.

Increasing the storage is simply a case of popping in a micro SD card, and you play a lot of games you might want to consider that.

So all in all, if you looking for a low priced gaming tablet that you really should take a look at the Wikipad 7.

Available now for £59.99 from Ebuyer.

Ubisoft recently took us to Paris to take a look at Assassin’s Creed Unity – in this interview we talk to Andree-Anne Boisvert and take a look at the companion app.

ACU_123_SP_CompanionApp_1412255576

Paris, 1789. The French Revolution turns a once-magnificent city into a place of terror and chaos. Its cobblestoned streets run red with the blood of commoners who dare to rise up against an oppressive aristocracy. Yet as the nation tears itself apart, a young man named Arno will embark upon an extraordinary journey to expose the true powers behind the Revolution. His pursuit will throw him into the middle of a ruthless struggle for the fate of a nation, and transform him into a true Master Assassin.

Andree-Anne Boisvert currently works as an Associate Producer at Ubisoft. She fell in love with video games as a teenager, right after learning Epona’s song.

After completing her master’s degree in computer science, she worked in various production roles on social and mobile games. Her game credits include a wide range of titles from the Petz & Raving Rabbids series, to some of the Assassin’s Creed titles (Brotherhood, Black Flag and Unity) and Prince of Persia.

For the last 2 years, she’s been making the console / mobile boundaries disappear by shipping meaningful companion app experiences for the console games players.

Andree-Anne’s goal is to offer the most immersive experience to Assassin’s Creed Unity players while using their mobile device.

So over to Andree-Anne:

Assassin’s Creed Unity will be released November 13th for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.

Activision have just announced Skylanders Trap Team Tablet edition and we got to play with it.

CDW Skylanders Trap Team tablet - 5

Children (and some adults) love Skylanders, that’s a fact, but the biggest problem has been needing to be at home with the console to play it. Well all that changes now with the introduction of the tablet edition of Skylanders Trap Team.

It comes in a starter pack that includes a Bluetooth Portal of Power, a controller, Food Fight and Snap Shot, two traps and a tray to keep it all one. The controller and the portal of power connect to the tablet (either an iOS, Android or FireOS device) using the Bluetooth low energy standard, which means longer lasting playtime. Both devices take AAA batteries (the controller takes 2 and the portal takes 3). Pairing the devices to your tablet is simple – just open the game and press the button on the device – simple as that!

CDW Skylanders Trap Team tablet - 12

The controller is stored on the underside of the portal of power making it very easy to transport. The controller itself is smaller than an usual console controller as it has been designed for smaller hands. It is however easy and comfortable to use and is Skylanders branded.

CDW Skylanders Trap Team tablet - 13

If you want to play the game in co-op mode then you can either use another controller or you can use another supported controller or gamepad.

The game itself appears on your tablet and you can either play it holding your tablet or you can slot it into the side of the portal of power, effectively making your own little gaming setup.

CDW Skylanders Trap Team tablet - 4

The portal supports tablets up to 12” in size so you should be ok for most tablets today.

You don’t have to play the game using the controller if you don’t want to. Just switch it off and you can use the touch screen controls on the tablet, and they work surprisingly well! The game detects if you are using the controller, or not, and changes the game for you.

CDW Skylanders Trap Team tablet - 3

You may be thinking that there will be times that you can’t use the portal as you might be in the car, or on a train, well don’t worry as you can actually play the game without using it! If the portal is not connected then the game switches automatically to using “on the go characters” which are digital versions of the toys, in this case Instant Snap Shot and Instant Food Fight. These are separate characters with their own skill trees, but they are essentially the same as the toys, just without having to carry them!

And talking of the toys, all of the previous toys are also supported with the tablet edition too!

The game itself is a free download, you only need to buy the starter pack to get the portal, controller and toys. However you can actually play the game without buying the starter pack! It’s not the full game obviously, but it will be a special introductory adventure that is being created just for this purpose. The idea being that if you like it you can buy the starter pack, and then all the toys!

The game itself is around 1GB for the initial download so you will want to be on a wireless connection when you first download it, and all later levels are actually streamed for you in the background ready for you to play. At this point I don’t know how large those levels will be and if it would be possible to stream them using a data connection (if you were on a train or in a car for example), but that will become clear soon.

I was very impressed with the whole thing, it was easy to setup and the game looks and plays exactly the same as the console version and throwing everything you need into the starter park, including a controller is a great move. I think that a lot of parents are going to find this keeps their children quiet for hours and hours on those long trips.

STT_Gen_TabletPack_Front of Box_1407773116

So the starter pack, which includes the portal of power, two toys, two traps, the controller and a tray will cost £64.99 and will be available at the same time as Skylanders Trap Team on the consoles, which is October 10th in Europe.

STT_Tablet_and_Portal_FINAL_HiRes_1407773098

Now, for the first time in franchise history, Activision Publishing, Inc. is bringing the full AAA console experience of a Skylanders game to tablet devices with the  Skylanders Trap Team Tablet Starter Pack. Launching day-and-date with the console version, the Skylanders Trap Team Tablet Starter Pack will include a Bluetooth version of the Traptanium Portal, a new ring of magical energy which reverses the magic of the Toys-to-Life category by letting players bring digital characters into the physical world. The new portal gives players the freedom to dock their tablet, providing a hands-free gaming experience. The Skylanders Trap Team Tablet Starter Pack will also include a Bluetooth-enabled controller for the best possible play experience; a built-in tablet stand; two Skylanders characters; two Traps; and a display tray that lets Portal Masters keep track of the Traps they’ve collected and which villains they have trapped.

Like the console version of the game, all 175 existing Skylanders toys will be forward compatible and playable across all platforms, truly allowing Portal Masters to play wherever and whenever they want. Delivering another meaningful technological leap to the Skylanders franchise, the launch of Skylanders Trap Team on tablet underscores Activision’s continued commitment to bringing significant innovation to the Toys-to-Life category that the company firmly established in 2011.

STT_Gen_TabletPack_Front of Box_1407773116

The game introduces more than 50 new playable Skylanders heroes and more than 40 villains in an all-new adventure, delivering a diverse and dynamic story-driven gameplay experience filled with adventure, combat, puzzles, mini games, activities and platforming, all set within a variety of lush, compelling environments.

KEY FEATURES:
•    Unprecedented Tablet Innovation – Skylanders Trap Team on tablet represents a huge technological leap for the Toys-to-Life category as one of the first AAA experiences of its kind on the platform. The team is delivering a feat of development innovation with a game that was built alongside the console versions, driving an unparalleled level of performance from the tablet devices that it supports.
•    Complete Toys-to-Life, Life to Toys Tablet Experience – The Skylanders Trap Team Tablet Starter Pack gives fans everything they need for a rich gameplay experience wherever and whenever they want to play. Tablet players will experience the Skylanders Trap Team innovation through a Bluetooth© version of the Traptanium Portal and Bluetooth© controller. They can also play the full game on their tablets using touch controls and two digital Skylanders characters and two digital Traps.

•    Two Ways to Play – Once players purchase the tablet Starter Pack and download the game via their tablet’s app store, the game will recognize the Traptanium Portal and unlock the full experience. Players will experience the same AAA content they come to expect from Skylanders console games, but with two ways to play:

•    “Controller” –– Fans can play the game just like the console version using the tablet-specific Traptanium Portal and toys with the custom Bluetooth Skylanders game controller included in the Starter Pack.
•     “Touch Controls” – For players who prefer to use touch controls instead of a controller, fans  have the option to play the game just using on-screen touch controls.

•    Innovative Gameplay – In Skylanders Trap Team, you can play as a Skylander or capture Skylands’ most wanted foes and unleash them for good. It’s up to Portal Masters to find these villains and capture them inside the new Traps that transport the villains into the real world via the Traptanium Portal. Once trapped, players can return the villain to Skylands as a playable character. This exciting new play pattern gives fans the option to switch between playing as a Skylander hero or a villain at any time, creating fun and unique “tag team” gameplay.
