Back in January we told you about StarTech’s new Thunderbolt laptop docking station – well now it’s time for our review.
The Thunderbolt Docking Station gives you a single connection point to your home / office workstation, for a flexible setup with formidable speed. Adding Thunderbolt and HDMI video outputs, Gigabit Ethernet, a USB 3.0 hub and 3.5mm audio ports to your Thunderbolt-equipped laptop has never been easier.
Who are StarTech?
From their website:

- Instruction Manual
A Closer Look
The majority of the ports are on the rear of the dock (these include 2 USB 3.0 ports, two Thunderbolt ports, HDMI, Gigabit Ethernet and of course the power connector.
The front of the device has a single USB 3.0 port, and a 3.5mm microphone and headphone socket. There is also a power light on the front which illuminates when the dock is connected to your Mac.
The first thing I noticed when I opened the box is that the actually contained a Thunderbolt cable. So often these days you get a Thunderbolt device only to find that you also need to go and buy a cable. Thankfully StarTech put a 1m cable in the box for you.
The Docking Station is quite small and needs to be placed on the stand and secured with two screws – this only takes a moment and you are ready to go.
Plug in the power adaptor and connect the Thunderbolt cable to the dock and then to either your Mac or PC with a Thunderbolt port and the device comes to life – you can see it’s all working by the light on the front of the device. You don’t need to install any drivers as this is taken care of for you automatically.
One thing I really liked was the ability to use both a Thunderbolt display, and an HDMI display at the same time. In fact, if you count the Mac’s display as well you can have three displays running! If your monitor has a mini-display port then you can use that too, however the HDMI port then gets disabled, so bear that in mind depending on your multiple display needs.
Overall I really liked the Thunderbolt Dock – it had everything I needed to expand my Mac’s connectors.
The only thing that might put people off is the price – it’s not cheap, but then you are getting a lot of ports for your money, plus you do get a Thunderbolt cable in the box. And if you have a Mac you know that Apple doesn’t make docking stations so this could be a very wise purchase if you want to expand your Mac!

LaCie Debuts World’s Fastest Portable Storage at CES 2014
Paris, France – Today, LaCie announced the Little Big Disk Thunderbolt 2 at the 2014 International CES Show. The new LaCie Little Big Disk, one of the first storage solutions enabled by Thunderbolt 2, is the fastest portable storage solution on the market. It delivers speeds up to 1375Mb/s, which is several times faster than any mobile USB 3.0 hard drive. In addition to its industry-leading performance, LaCie worked with designer Neil Poulton to bring a cutting edge look to the product. For the first time, the Little Big Disk features a sleek, black finish to its fully aluminium enclosure.
Perfect for no-compromise video professionals, the new LaCie Little Big Disk permits streaming and editing of 4K or 3D video while in the field – a giant leap forward for mobile post-production workflows. The LaCie Little Big Disk is powered by a set of 500GB PCIe Gen 2 SSDs in RAID 0 that deliver a perfect blend of performance and capacity that accelerates in the most demanding workflow.
With the fastest SSDs on the market, LaCie had to optimize the Little Big Disk’s interior design to improve the cooling efficiency, while keeping it as silent as possible. By incorporating a thermo-regulated fan, it only turns on when necessary and produces nearly zero noise. As a result, the LaCie Little Big Disk delivers the best possible performance without disrupting the creative professional workflow.
“Thunderbolt 2 creates an entirely new way of thinking about 4K workflows, specifically the ability to support raw 4K video transfer and data delivery concurrently,” said Jason Ziller, Marketing Director for Thunderbolt at Intel. “LaCie’s Little Big Disk brings this advanced capability to a small, sleek and very portable storage solution that works with 4K streams in the field in ways previously not possible.”
“It’s no small feat, incorporating the most advanced storage technologies into a portable product,” said Erwan Girard, Business Unit Manager, LaCie. “With the Little Big Disk, LaCie engineered a remarkably powerful product to fit in the palm of your hand. Something no one else in the industry can claim.”
At CES, LaCie demonstrates how the Little Big Disk lets videographers work directly from RAW files, getting full quality from footage and seeing the edits in real time. LaCie will show how professionals can capture 250 gigabytes of 4k footage on a Little Big Disk in the field, and then transfer the content to the post-production team in under 10 minutes.
This announcement follows the unprecedented success of LaCie’s Thunderbolt Series and further asserts the company’s commitment to deliver high-quality products featuring the latest Thunderbolt technology.
The LaCie Little Big Disk Thunderbolt 2 will be available for purchase in the first quarter of 2014 through LaCie’s resellers and LaCie.com. Thunderbolt cable included. The LaCie Little Big Disk is protected by a 3-year limited warranty.

What’s in the Box (bag):
The only thing in the bag is the Thunderbolt cable.
- Dual-channel, simultaneous bi-directional data and video transfers up to 10 Gbps
- Supports Power-over-cable, for bus-powered Thunderbolt devices
- Connecting a Thunderbolt-equipped computer to a Thunderbolt-enabled device located up to 9ft/3m away, such as an external drive enclosure, RAID array, monitor, etc.
- Connecting two Thunderbolt-equipped Mac computers, for Target Disk Mode file transfers
- Connect a Thunderbolt-equipped MacBook Pro to an iMac, to use the iMac as the display for the MacBook Pro
If you have a Mac and want to connect to one of Apple’s Thunderbolt devices, or to an external drive that uses Thunderbolt then you will need to buy a Thunderbolt cable. And like most Apple cables they are not cheap. The Apple store sells a 0.5m cable for £25 and a 2.0m one for £35. But what if you want a longer one, say 3.0m? Well Apple don’t seem sell a cable in that size so you will need to look around for one online, and that’s where StarTech.com come in. We have reviewed a number of their products in the past, so when we were given the chance to review one of their 3.0m Thunderbolt cables we said yes.
The cable comes in a simple plastic bag and takes only a few seconds to connect up and get running. Unlike the Apple cables, this one is black, which I personally prefer to the usual Apple white, but that’s just me!
The cable worked perfectly and the extra length proved invaluable so that I could position the external drive I was using on the other side of my desk away from the MacBook Pro on the other end.
StarTech sell Thunderbolt cables in a variety of lengths from 0.5m up to 3.0m and they do sell white versions if that’s what you want.
Cost wise, the 3.0m cable is listed on their website at £68.39 which isn’t cheap, so make sure you really need 3.0m before spending that sort of money on a single cable. Oh and as usual do a search online for the best price as Amazon had it for £54.26!
One thing I did notice on their website was that the shorted length cables are more expensive than the official Apple ones. I haven’t yet tested an Apple Thunderbolt cable to see if their is any performance difference, but bear that in mind when choosing your cable.
So all in all it’s a good quality cable, it’s just a little expensive.

The drive also supports a JBOD mode (allocate each disk individually to a specific task) excellent option for users running Windows OS on a Mac.
Additional features found on the My Book Thunderbolt Duo include out-of-the-box compatibility with Mac OS Time Machine and formatting for HFS + Journaled for Mac; capability for multi-stream workflows; and a 3-year limited warranty.
