TomTom have just updated their TomTom App for iOS to version 1.14, bringing an updated map and other updates.

What’s New in Version 1.14

- LATEST, UPDATED TOMTOM MAP: because roads are constantly changing, on average 15% of roads change every year, your TomTom App update comes with the latest and most up-to-date map.

- ADVANCED PLANNING UPDATE: change your pre-planned route without having to start from scratch. You can now change the starting point, destination, or departure time – and see how it affects your drive and arrival time.

- KEEP YOUR SETTINGS: If you are using the iCloud backup feature you can now delete the app to free up space when updating. Make sure that iCloud is enabled on your device, then open and close the TomTom app to make a backup. Now delete the app to free up space and download the update from the App Store.

TomTom has released a new update to the app that makes it available to more Android owners. The latest version is optimised for use with the latest and most popular smartphone handsets including the Samsung Galaxy S3, HTC One X and Google Nexus 4.

As well as supporting more than 200 of the newest Android devices, the update brings other improvements.  The download manager has been improved and maps are now stored on the phone’s SD card (if available) to save valuable phone memory. The Driving View has also been updated, making the journey information clearer at a glance.  In addition, postcode entry is more flexible and the app can find locations from the phone address book more reliably.

TomTom Navigation for Android v1.1 is available to download now from the Google Play Store.

- HD TRAFFIC: Receive more accurate traffic jam locations, road closures and roadworks. The improved HD Traffic service helps you to get to your destination even faster.
- GOOGLE LOCAL SEARCH: due to the discontinuation of the Google Local Search service, TomTom has decided to remove the feature. You can still search for locations using TomTom Places. Alternatively you can search Google in your browser and use the Copied Address feature to plan routes to these locations.

There is also a special mount coming for use with Android devices. And don’t worry about the size of your device because the mount has moveable holders. It also has a built in charger for the phone or device and a microphone on a cable that can be placed anywhere in the car for better and clearer speech.

Today at IFA TomTom has finally announced their navigation app is coming for Android.

TomTom’s on-board maps, IQ Routes and HD Traffic will give Android users the freshest map, the fastest routes and the most accurate arrival times. The application is set for release in October 2012.

“We aim to make TomTom content and services available to as many devices and platforms as we can,” says Corinne Vigreux, Managing Director at TomTom. “Bringing TomTom navigation to Android smartphones is, therefore, a significant milestone for us.”

This announcement follows the recent release of the TomTom Hands-free Car Kit for Smartphones. The kit allows users to charge their phone and mount it in clear view. An in-built speaker then delivers the highest quality audio for loud and clear navigation instructions and calls.

 

More details, pricing and availability will be announced closer to the launch date.

The TomTom Navigation app for Android will offer drivers:

 

  • World-class navigation – The latest, most accurate TomTom maps available – with no need for a mobile signal or data plan.
  • Lifetime maps – Free updates that ensure access to the latest maps and fastest routes.
  • IQ Routes – Arrival times that drivers can rely on – at all times of day.

- NAVIGATE TO CONTACTS: users were unable to select addresses from their address book without agreeing to share information with TomTom. With this update you can select contact addresses without needing to agree to information sharing. Please note that the app never has and never will share any of your contact details with TomTom or anyone else.
- AUDIO OUTPUT SWITCH: easily stream all iPhone audio to the powerful speaker of the TomTom Hands-free car kit (or any other Bluetooth A2DP device).
- FOURSQUARE‚ PLACES SEARCH: Find millions of exciting places to visit by searching with Foursquare, even if you are not a Foursquare user. Log into Foursquare and you can also check in at your destination so you dont miss any points on your way to becoming its new mayor.
- NAVIGATE TO COPIED ADDRESSES: easily select locations you found on websites or other apps by copying their address and pasting into the TomTom Navigation app. The app will automatically work out the location and navigate you there ‚ no typing needed!
- CHANGE ROUTE TYPE: plan a route using your default route type setting and quickly recalculate it using a different type with this new Route Option.
- CUSTOMIZABLE MENU: reorder the items in the main menu and location selectors to your personal preference. If you use your address book frequently as destination choice, you can even place the ‚ Contact‚  item back into the Navigate To‚ menu.
- CLOSING THE MENU ON IPAD: on iPad you can now choose to close the menu only when double tapping outside it. This stops the menu from closing if you accidentally miss a button.

TomTom yesterday launched the TomTom Hands Free Car Kit for smartphones with the highest quality audio for loud, clear hands-free calling and navigation. The new Car Kit features an advanced noise and echocancellation system, which dramatically reduces background noise for the caller and removes ambient noise for the driver.

New mounting options make smartphone use on the move safer and more convenient.  The newly designed Car Kit has an adjustable grip to fit any smartphone with or without its cover. An extendable microphone can be clipped to the sun visor to ensure conversations are louder and clearer.

TomTom yesterday releases its Summer map.  This latest map update includes road changes and Points of Interest (POI) related to major events across Europe this Summer.

New stadiums, temporary and permanent event venues and park & rides across the UK, Poland and the Ukraine are included.  Surrounding areas have been checked and surveyed to ensure complete mapping accuracy around important events.

In total, 1.5 million km of new roads have been added to TomTom’s global map between May 2011 and May 2012.  Major map changes include adding 107,000 km of new road networks in Brazil, and updating 12,000 km of motorways in Spain.  Maps have been extended to cover greater areas of Mexico, Malaysia and Indonesia.  Southern Africa maps now include more unpaved roads in rural areas for better routing and more accurate estimatedtimes of arrival.

TomTom yesterday released the TomTom Via 130, featuring a new Speak & Go function. Drivers can control the device with just the sound of their voice, as well as making hands-free calls, which helps keep hands on the wheel and focus on the road.

Speak & Go recognises over 1,000 commands and their synonyms, so drivers can talk naturally and input addresses with ease. Plus, the TomTom Via 130 takes safe and simple driving one step further, with hands-free calling via Bluetooth enabling drivers to make and answer calls safely in the car.

The Via 130 is pioneering TomTom’s lifetime free daily map changes. Updates are based on reports from TomTom’s Map Share community of 21 million, and help drivers to deal with frequent road changes such as new speed limits and blocked roads. A Map Share service has previously been available to certain customers using maps which are less than 12 months old, but it will now be offered to cover the lifetime of a device.

Also launched today was the TomTom Via 135, which has all of the same features and functionalities as the Via 130, but a larger screen size. The TomTom Via 130 has a 4.3” screen, and the TomTom Via 135 has a 5” screen.

Other features of the TomTom Via 130 and 135 include:
