Final Thoughts

I like this drive. It is small and fast and it is very light weight so you won’t even notice you are carrying it. It is also very quiet and even after a lot of use it wasn’t that hot.

The drive easily picks up fingerprints and other marks, but it can be wiped down with little effort.

The inclusion of disk encryption software was a very welcome addition, and the software is very easy to use. I highly recommend if you are going to use this drive for storing anything personal you use the encrypted partition.

I was happy with the speeds from my USB 3.0 card, and I think if I had a motherboard with a dedicated USB 3.0 port on it I would probably get faster speeds!

Price wise, the 64GB is £183, the 128GB is £325 and the 256GB is £624, so make no mistake these drives are not cheap, but they are good.

Back in November we announced the LaCie FastKey USB 3.0 SSD, and I said then I wanted one – and now I managed to get my hands on one so it’s time for the UWHS hands-on review.

IMG_3540

Tiny Size, Serious Technology

The LaCie FastKey isn’t just another USB key—it’s a real mobile SSD. It’s one of the speediest, most robust choices on the market for portable data storage. Featuring a solid-state drive and DRAM cache, it also offers up to 120GB of capacity.

USB 3.0: Up to 10x Faster than USB 2.0

With the FastKey’s USB 3.0 interface, you can store and transfer your files faster than ever before, no matter how large they are. USB 3.0 represents an enormous speed increase from USB 2.0, and best of all, since it’s backward compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1, there’s never any worry about connectivity.

Speed, Strength, and Security

AES 256-bit encryption is included in the FastKey, along with LaCie’s Private-Public software, which allows you to create a private partition on your key. This way, it’s simple to keep private data and public data separate—letting you use your FastKey any time, anywhere.

  • Lightning-fast speed up to 260MB/s
  • The best technology in a tiny size: USB 3.0 SSD with DRAM cache
  • Ultra-secure AES 256-bit encryption
  • Stylish and sturdy metal casing

They come in 30GB ($149.99), 60GB ($249.99) or 120GB ($474.99), but as you can see, they are not cheap!

For this review i was lucky enough to get hold of the 120GB version!

Icy Dock have just introduced their new dual raid enclosure, called the MB662USEB-2S, which is compatible with both Windows and Macs.

15-11-2010 20-58-2715-11-2010 20-58-44

15-11-2010 20-59-0015-11-2010 20-59-11

Here is what Icy Dock says about the MB662USEB-2S:

Icy Dock is proud to introduce its upgrade version of the dual bay RAID enclosure that set the standard for professionals, the MB662USEB-2S. This product combines the feature sets of the current MB662 Series into the ultimate RAID device for media professionals and individuals looking for performance, backups and storage expansion.

Similar to the current models, the MB662USEB-2S still utilizes an aluminum construction so that it is light weight for portability, and has the necessary material for optimal heat dissipation and durability. To help with temperature management, the cooling fan has been upgraded to an ultra quiet Sunon MagLev 40mm fan, and still features a speed control to allow the user flexibility according to his or her sound or cooling preferences.

The main addition to this new version is the quad interface design, allowing for USB 2.0, eSATA, FireWire 800, and FireWire 400, giving the user access to the best performance whether the data is needed on a Mac, Windows, and Linux system. Also, using an updated RAID controller, this unit can now accept 2TB drives in each slot to use in all 3 RAID modes, and thanks to a new concatenated JBOD mode, the user can have a combined storage volume without the risk for total data loss. The data is written across a single drive, and when it becomes full, it moves to the next drive, so if a drive fails, only the data on that drive will be lost. This is perfect for media players and NAS routers where a single combined volume is ideal. And as always, RAID 0 and RAID 1 are built in to offer blazing fast performance or maximum data redundancy.

Feature:

* Support 2TB+ in each slot for all 3 RAID modes.
* MB662 Series fits 2 x 3.5” SATA I/II hard drives for maximum storage.
* Plug & Play USB 2.0 + eSATA + FireWire800 combo with OXFORD936DS chipset.
* FireWire 400 capability via FW800 to FW400 converter cable, supplied in the box.
* Built-in hardware RAID controller allows Three different RAID configurations:
RAID 0 (FAST), RAID 1 (SAFE), & JBOD (Concatenation/Spanned)
* No additional software and hardware required for RAID capabilities.
* User friendly Screw-less design just plug in the hard drive and play.
* 40 mm Sunon cooling fan with adjustable speed control.

* Multi-drive exchangeability & maintenance capabilities.
* Built with Solid Aluminum Construction for body.
* Built in security slot for security cable kit.
* Compatible for both Windows and Mac.

You can learn more on the Icy Dock website.

What is USB 3.0?

The website EverythingUSB.com describes USB 3.0:

USB 3.0 is the next major revision of the ubiquitous Universal Serial Bus, created in 1996 by a consortium of companies led by Intel to dramatically simplify the connection between host computer and peripheral devices. Fast forwarding to 2009, USB 2.0 has been firmly entrenched as the de-facto interface standard in the PC world for years (with about 6 billion devices sold), and yet still the need for more speed by ever faster computing hardware and ever greater bandwidth demands again drive us to where a couple of hundred megabits per second is just not fast enough.

In 2007, Intel demonstrated SuperSpeed USB at the Intel Developer Forum. Version 1.0 of the USB 3.0 (confusing, isn’t it?) specification was completed on November 17, 2008. As such, the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) has taken over managing the specifications and publishes the relevant technical documents necessary to allow the world of developers and hardware manufacturers to begin to develop products around the USB 3.0 protocol.

In a nutshell, USB 3.0 promises the following:

  • Higher transfer rates (up to 4.8 Gbps)
  • Increased maximum bus power and increased device current draw to better accommodate power-hungry devices
  • New power management features
  • Full-duplex data transfers and support for new transfer types
  • New connectors and cables for higher speed data transfer…although they are backwards compatible with USB 2.0 devices and computers

This drive only comes as a 500GB drive and requires you to have a USB 3.0 port on your computer.

Only very recent desktops and laptops will have USB 3.0 ports on them, so if you are not lucky enough to have them yet you will need either a desktop PCI Express Adaptor or the laptop Express Port adaptor.

If you want to start using USB 3.0 hard drives but don’t have any USB 3.0 ports on your laptop you will need an adaptor. We take a look at the Iomega USB 3.0 PCI Express Adaptor.

Iomega USB 3.0 PCI Express Adaptor

With USB 3.0 drives now starting to be released, and with people wanting faster speeds, more people are finding that their current computer hardware doesn’t support USB 3.0 – because unless you have a fairly new machine you won’t have USB 3.0 ports!

Obviously this is a problem and unless you really feel like buying a new computer you need an adaptor.

If you have a laptop we recently reviewed the Iomega USB 3.0 ExpressCard Adaptor.

If you have a desktop computer, with a spare PCI Express slot, then the new Iomega USB 3.0 PCI Express Adaptor is the one for you.

Adding this little card will give you two USB 3.0 ports.
